Baseball Falls in Second-Straight Two-Run Game at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team (13-36, 6-14 CAA) played another close game against Charleston (31-19, 12-8 CAA) on Saturday, but lost its three-run lead in a 5-3 defeat in South Carolina.

Towson had a three-run advantage after one-and-a-half innings, including two RBI hits by Brad Powers.  Charleston scored three unearned runs in the bottom half of the second and, after three scoreless frames by both teams, added runs in the sixth and seventh for the win.

Key Stats:
  • Jack Rotteveel reached base all four times at the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with a walk and a triple.  Brad Powers hit 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI.
  • The loss went to Gavin Weyman (3-8) despite just one earned run out of four surrendered, going 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.  Dean Stramara pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief.
  • For Charleston, Dupree Hart was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI out of the leadoff spot.  Reliever Tradd James (3-0) picked up the victory with 5.1 innings of scoreless play, adding three strikeouts, while Nathan Ocker had his 12th save of the year.
How it Happened:
  • The second batter of the game, Brad Powers blasted a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for a solo home run and a 1-0 Towson lead.
  • After Gavin Weyman protected against bases loaded and no out in the bottom of the first, Towson used primarily first pitch swings and added to its lead.  After getting first and second with one out on a Tom Flacco bunt single and a Trey Martinez walk, Javon Fields swung at the first pitch for a single to right, scoring Flacco from second.  The next pitch, Powers roped a single to left-center, bringing in Martinez for a 3-0 advantage.
  • Charleston took advantage of a fielding error that put two on with two out in the bottom of the second.  A Dupree Hart two-run triple then an RBI double by Bradley Dixon tied the game at 3-3.
  • Weyman recovered and pitched the next three innings scoreless to go head-to-head with the Charleston bullpen.  In the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars took the lead on a Hart sacrifice fly for a 4-3 score.
  • The home team added another run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to go up 5-3.  Towson could not get closer and fell by two runs.
