Baseball Edged in Back-and-Forth Affair at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team (13-37, 6-15 CAA) came back to take a two-run lead in the eighth inning in the series finale at Charleston (32-19, 13-8 CAA) and also led in the ninth, but the Cougars walked off in the final frame to win 10-9.

Down 6-4 after six innings, a seventh inning run then three runs in the eighth, including a two-run double by Richard Miller, gave Towson an 8-6 advantage.  Charleston tied in the next half inning, then Towson went back up on a Jack Rotteveel sacrifice fly.  But the Cougars scored two in the bottom of the ninth to walk off.

Key Stats:
  • Noah Cabrera had a four-RBI day, batting 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.  Zach Piazza reached base twice on a 2-for-3 afternoon, scoring twice, while Tom Flacco batted 2-for-2 with a run scored.
  • On the mound, starter Connor Coyle had a no decision with three runs in 1.1 innings.  John Cranston and Oluwasayo Kintunde had scoreless outings in relief.  Austin Weber (1-2) got the loss in relief with two runs, only one earned, in the ninth inning.
  • For Charleston, Joey Mundy batted 4-for-4 with two RBI and a double.  Trey Fields (1-0) was credited the win after finishing the ninth inning.
How it Happened:
  • Towson got a run across in the opening inning: After Javon Fields walked and took second on a ground out, Noah Cabrera hit a two-out double down the right field line, scoring Fields for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
  • Charleston also scored in its first time up, going ahead on a two-run triple by Chaz Davey.  Later, an RBI double by Joey Mundy put the Cougars up 3-1.
  • Towson tied the game in the top of the third off another RBI hit by Cabrera, a two-run single to left, to make it 3-3.
  • After Charleston went back ahead in the third, Cabrera came through again in the top of the fifth with a walk.  The final pitch was a wild pitch, allowing Fields to score from third to tie the score at 4-4.
  • Following a lightning delay, the home team got back the lead with a two-run single to be ahead 6-4.
  • The Tigers got a run back in the seventh off an RBI fielder's choice by Cabrera, then in the eighth, Richard Miller pinch hit and blasted a two-run double to score Dirk Masters and Tom Flacco, then Miller scored on a subsequent error to push Towson back ahead 8-6.
  • Again the score was tied in the bottom of the eighth off a two-run single with two outs.
  • Zach Piazza singled to lead off the ninth and advanced via sacrifice bunt and passed ball.  Jack Rotteveel brought him in on a sacrifice fly to give Towson a 9-8 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Charleston got all four runners on base via single, RBI double, international walk and reach on error to win 10-9.
