Woodall Signs First Pro Contract with MLL’s Atlanta Blaze

ATLANTA -- After a record-setting career, Towson University faceoff specialist Alex Woodall has signed his professional contract, agreeing to play for the Major League Lacrosse franchise the Atlanta Blaze.

The number-one overall pick in the 2019 MLL Collegiate Draft in March, Woodall was originally selected by the Ohio Machine. The organization was dissolved by the MLL in April, allowing the Blaze to claim his rights at the MLL Rookie Selection in late April.

Towson's all-time career faceoff wins leader signed with the Atlanta Blaze Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta. Woodall had options to play professionally as he was also drafted fourth overall in the Premiere Lacrosse League draft by the Whipsnakes LC.

This season, Woodall won a remarkable 74.2 percent of his draws, which ranks second all-time for a single season at Towson. The Annapolis, Maryland won 227 of his 306 chances, with his win total ranking second in program history for a single season. The St. Mary's High School product missed four games late in the season with an upper body injury. He returned to duty for the first round of the NCAA Tournament, winning 22 of his 31 draws against Maryland.

Woodall's name lands on several top charts beyond Towson. His 74.2 is the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record for a single season, surpassing Alex Smith's mark of 72.3 during the 2007 campaign. His 227 wins this year rank fifth all-time in league history.

On the season, Woodall had six games with at least 20 faceoff wins. He won double-digit draws in every game except against Delaware (April 20) in the regular season after suffering an injury. He began that game winning the first five faceoffs.

A 2019 Inside Lacrosse Media All-American, Woodall became the program's all-time career wins leader on March 30 against Hofstra as he won the 508th draw of his time with the Black & Gold. He finished his career with 583 career faceoff wins at Towson, which ranks first in program history and fourth all-time in CAA action. His 64.7 career winning percentage stands second all-time in CAA history while ranking third in Towson history.

Woodall, who is a candidate for USILA All-America honors, logged 16 points in his career, scoring eight goals with eight assists. He had a career-best eight points in 2019, scoring twice while adding six helpers. He set a career mark in 2017 with five goals while adding two assists.

Woodall will not be the only Tiger in Atlanta this summer. Former teammate Sid Ewell was picked up by the Blaze in the dispersal draft in late April. Additionally, former Tiger Spencer Ford serves the Blaze as the vice president of player personnel. He was previously the general manager for the Blaze from 2016-18.

The Atlanta Blaze open the 2019 season on June 2 with a 4 p.m. game against the Denver Outlaws. The Blaze will play at Grady Stadium.
