Baseball Early Lead Does Not Hold vs. Northeastern

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (13-39, 6-17 CAA) had a lead after five innings vs. Northeastern (26-26, 12-11 CAA) but fell Friday afternoon 6-3.

Towson led 2-0 with a fourth inning two-run home run by Jack Rotteveel.  Northeastern outscored the Tigers 6-1 the rest of the way for the win.

Key Stats:
  • Jack Rotteveel finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and two RBI.  Trent Gast-Woodard finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Despite starting the game with five shutout innings, Josh Seils (2-8) got the loss with 5.1 total innings, having three runs charged and five strikeouts.  Austin Weber and John Cranston each had two-thirds of an inning scoreless.
  • Scott Holzwasser, Northeastern's clean-up batter, finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run.  The win went to starter Sean Mellen (5-2), tossing seven innings with three runs and eight Ks, while Andrew Misiaszek picked up his 10th save with a scoreless ninth.
How it Happened:
  • The game started as a pitchers duel, with Josh Seils and Sean Mellen going through the first three innings with a combined two hits and seven strikeouts.
  • The stalemate was broken in the bottom of the fourth with Zach Piazza on first and two out.  Jack Rotteveel took the first pitch to him and sent it opposite way over the right field wall for a home run, giving Towson a 2-0 advantage.
  • Northeastern tied the game in the top of the sixth with back-to-back solo home runs by Jake Farrell and Scott Holzwasser.  Later, a wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed a run to score and put the Huskies ahead.  Next inning, Northeastern added another run off a fielder's choice to go up 4-2.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Towson pieced together some two-out runners to cut the deficit in half.  Trent Gast-Woodard grounded a single to left, scoring Richard Miller to make the score 4-3 Northeastern.
  • The visitors responded with two runs in the next inning, including a RBI double by Spenser Smith, for a 6-3 advantage.
  • Towson attempted a final comeback in the bottom of the ninth, leading off with an Isaiah Winikur single, but Northeastern held for the 6-3 win.
