Three Tigers Earn CAA Leadership and Sport Excellence Awards

RICHMOND, Va. -- Three former Towson University student-athletes were named among the winners for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Leadership and Sport Excellence Award. The league office made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Representing men's lacrosse, Zach Goodrich was selected, while Anna Holehouse was selected for women's volleyball. Jack Saunderson was named as the men's swimming and diving recipient.

The award mirrors the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, which is presented in men's and women's basketball, and the Chuck Boone Leadership Award, which is presented in football. One student-athlete was chosen from each of the 19 other sports sponsored by the CAA for embodying the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements.

The first-ever three-time captain for the men's lacrosse team, Goodrich became the program's first-ever two-time USILA Division I First Team All-American at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Drafted third overall in two separate professional leagues, Goodrich played in every game of his Black & Gold career, causing 65 turnovers, collecting 152 ground balls while scoring 19 points on 16 goals and three assists. Goodrich helped guide the Tigers to four-straight CAA Championship game appearances, backing the Tigers to three CAA titles and three berths in the NCAA Tournament (2016, 2017, 2019). As a sophomore second-team All-American, Goodrich and the Tigers reached Championship Weekend after an impressive run through the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Goodrich was a two-time Tewaaraton Award semifinalist and was on the preseason watch list three times. 

In the community, Goodrich worked closely with the Cool Kids Campaign, Susan G. Komen Maryland's Race for the Cure and was integral to the program's successes with Mustache Madness to help raise funds for the HEADstrong Foundation.

This season, Holehouse led Towson's back-line efforts this season with 595 digs. Holehouse led the league in total digs while ranking fourth in digs per set at a 4.84 rate. In the early portion of the season, Holehouse became the program's all-time digs leader and has brought her career total to 2,268, which ranks third all-time in league history. The Joppa, Marylander has served a career second-best 26 aces. While working on her master's degree, Holehouse put up 141 assists this season, the second-most in her Tiger career. She averaged 1.08 assists per set as a senior. Holehouse collected CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year honors as a rookie and was named to the CAA All-Rookie team. During her career, Holehouse garnered All CAA Third-Team honors twice and was a Second Team selection as a senior.

Off the court, Holehouse was involved in several community service efforts, including time with the CAA Blood Drive, Puerto Rico Relief Effort, and several Autism-driven organizations including Pathfinders, Autism Speaks and Aces for Autism. Additionally, Holehouse volunteered with the kid's ministry at Mountain Christian Church, Second Saturday Serve and the Homeless Ministry. Holehouse also volunteered with The Big Event on campus at Towson University. 

Named CAA Men's Swimmer of the Year three times (2017, 2018, 2019), Saunderson is one of the best swimmers to come through not only Towson's program, but the league as well. A four-time 200-yard butterfly champion, Saunderson also captured the 100 butterfly three times. A three-time NCAA qualifier, Saunderson earned All-America honors in the 200 fly and honorable mention plaudits in the 100 fly. In 2018, Saunderson swam to honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 and 200 fly and was honorable mention All-America in the 200 fly in 2017. On three occasions, Saunderson was selected as the CAA Most Outstanding Swimmer for the men's championships. Additionally, Saunderson was named to Team USA's national team for the 2018-19 season.

In the community, Saunderson worked closely with Special Olympics Maryland throughout his career. He also helped set up the annual TigerThon and did school visits at Johnnycake Elementary School. Saunderson also participated in The Big Event on campus.
