GAVLE, Sweden – Representing Italy, Towson University rising senior Michella Obijiaku concluded her season by finishing ninth overall in the shot put at the 2019 European Athletics under-23 Championships in Gävle, Sweden Saturday.
 
Obijiaku's best effort in the final round was 15.56 meters, which was better than her qualifying mark. She was one of 12 competitors in the final.
 
Obijiaku lives in London, United Kingdom, but resided in Italy previous and is the daughter of Italian citizens. She spent part of her childhood in Venice and has Italian citizenship. Obijiaku recently won the shot put at the U23 Italian Individual Championships on Saturday, June 8 at the Stadio Raul Guidobaldi in Rieti, Italy, about 50 miles from Rome, with a throw of 16.08.
 
Obijiaku was named CAA Women's Field Athlete Of The Year. She helped the Tigers finish second overall at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships during the outdoor season. The ECAC finish was the best in program history.
 
Named CAA Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete following the conference championship meet, Obijiaku competed in the NCAA East Region Prelims, finishing 14th overall in the shot put with a throw of 16.14 meters, the second best of her career. She established a school record in winning the shot put at the CAA Championship after a meet-record toss of 16.23 meters. In addition to winning the shot put, she won the hammer throw with a personal best toss of 58.77 meters (192-10).
 
Obijiaku won the hammer throw at the Penn Relays (56.57 meters) and was fifth in the hammer throw at the ECAC Championships. During the indoor season, she helped Towson finish third at the ECAC Championships by winning the weight throw with a school record toss of 19.76 meters, which was an indoor British National Record.
