Women’s Soccer Stumbles in Weekend Finale

TOWSON, Md. -- Despite plenty of pressure early, the Towson University women's soccer team stumbled in its weekend finale against the Red Foxes of Marist College Sunday afternoon at the newly renovated Tiger Soccer Complex, falling 3-0.

Towson (0-2-0) played its second game of the young season at the Tiger Soccer Complex, which underwent a revitalization over the summer to install an artificial turf surface.

Marist (1-0-0) scored twice in the second half to pick up a road win in the Red Foxes' first contest of the 2019 season. Marist got three goals from three different sources.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers put pressure on Marist early in the first meeting between the teams since 1997 as rookie Phoebe Canoles put a chance over the bar in the third minute.
  • Towson's starting goalkeeper, Hannah Warner, made two saves in a three-minute stretch as the Red Foxes countered for on-goal chances in the fifth and eighth minutes.
  • Marist struck first in the 17th minute behind a marker from Victoria Colatosti after a miscue from a Tiger defender.
  • Canoles had another look at the goal but put her second chance just right in the 27th minute.
  • Late in the first half, Towson reapplied pressure in a three-minute burst, getting shots from Canoles and Justine Stoner while Pierre book-ended the set with a pair of shots on goal.
  • Warner made one final save for the Tigers in the opening half as Towson trailed 1-0 after 45 minutes. Opening the second, the Tigers subbed in Lindsey Pazdziorko in for Warner in goal.
  • Early in the fresh stanza, Nikki Logan had a strong effort that was turned aside by Marist keeper Abigail Renaud.
  • Ten minutes into the second half, Pazdziorko, making her first college appearance, was tested early, turning aside three shots in a four-minute stretch while also weathering a corner kick.
  • Marist extended its lead in the 66th minute on a slipped pass from Abby Murphy that found Kaylin Sprerly for a one-on-one and a 2-0 lead.
  • One minute later, the Tigers countered as Pierre tipped a header on goal that was thwarted by Renaud. Ten minutes later, Towson continued to push back as Jenna Blank and Madison Carr each put a chance wide.
  • In the 83rd minute, Marist scored the game's final goal as Leah Barbierri dribbled to the corner and chipped in a shot that found the back of the net.

Behind the Numbers
  • Marist out-shot the Tigers 21-15, including 12-8 in the second half. Towson's chances came nearly evenly as the Tigers took seven chances in the first half.
  • Marist had four corner kicks, with three in the second half. The Tigers had one in the final 45 minutes of the match.
