Volleyball Opens 2019 Campaign With Sweep

BALTIMORE -- The 2019 season got underway in sweeping fashion for the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers topped Quinnipiac 3-0 Friday night at the Morgan State Invitational, hosted at Morgan State's Hill Field House.

Towson (1-0) utilized second play in the second and third sets en route to the season-opening sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-15). The Tigers' attack was led by nine kills from Emily Jarome and Olivia Finckel while Annie Ertz paced Towson with 10 digs. Libero Camryn Allen finished with nine digs as setter Marrisa Wonders hoisted 32 assists.

Quinnipiac (1-2) hit for .385 in the first set but was stymied in the second and third, hitting under 10 percent in both frames. Kaleigh Oates led with nine kills.

How it Happened
  • Towson never trailed in the first set, but endured three ties in the first six points. The Tigers strung together a 6-1 run thanks in part to a pair of kills from Jarome and two Bobcat attack errors.
  • In the remainder of the first set, Towson held the Bobcats at bay, never allowing Quinnipiac closer than two points. Towson finished the first set on a 4-1 run with two kills from Silvia Grassini and a service ace from Fay Bakodimou.
  • The second set saw Towson jump out to a 3-0 lead, including back-to-back kills from Finckel and Lydia Wiers. The Tigers continued to build the lead out to 7-1 and eventually 11-3 before Quinnipiac called timeout.
  • The reset worked for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats scored four of the next six points to trim Towson's lead to 13-7. Three sets of back-to-back points helped Towson extend its advantage to 19-10, followed by a 4-0 burst to make it 23-11. Finckel and Grassini combined for blocks as did Finckel and Wiers in the run. A Bobcat miscue sealed the set win for the Tigers and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The third set was another wire-to-wire lead for the Tigers as Towson jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first five points. Quinnipiac pulled back to deadlock the set at 5-5.
  • Breaking the tie, Towson went on a 9-1 run and took a 14-6 lead, despite a Quinnipiac timeout. The Bobcats pulled out a small run and cut the Tiger lead down to 18-13 before Towson closed the door by scoring seven of the next nine points for a 25-15 set win.
