Tigers Complete Weekend Sweep Over Morgan State

BALTIMORE -- The Towson University women's volleyball team put together a trio of clean sweep victories this weekend, concluding the Morgan State Invitational with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-11) victory over the host Lady Bears Saturday evening at Hill Field House.

Towson (3-0) swept each of its three matches this weekend, going 3-0 over Quinnipiac on Friday and sweeping Seton Hall earlier in the day on Saturday.

The Tigers landed three student-athletes on the All-Tournament Team: sophomore outside hitter Emily Jarome, senior outside hitter Annie Ertz and freshman middle blocker Lydia Wiers. Ertz was named Best Defensive Player while Wiers was selected as the Most Valuable Player.

Wiers led the Tigers with 12 kills on 16 swings for a .625 hitting percentage. Silvia Grassini and Olivia Finckel knocked down nine kills apiece while Marrisa Wonders posted another 36 assists.

Morgan State (2-1) was paced by 12 kills from Zoe McBride while Tylar Robinson finished with eight kills. Roi Wallace had 21 assists for Morgan State.

How it Happened
  • Towson trailed through most of the first set before back-to-back kills from Jarome and Wiers deadlocked action at 21-21. Towson chipped away into the Bears' lead when it was 18-14 thanks to a 5-1 run.
  • The Tigers closed the opening set on a 6-1 run, including the final four points on kills from Wiers and Finckel, along with a service ace from Fay Bakodimou and a set error from Morgan to give Towson a 25-22 decision.
  • Set two saw back-and-forth action that featured eight ties until the set was evened at 12-12. The Tigers strung together a 6-2 run to break things open and wrest control of the set 18-15.
  • After a Morgan State timeout with the score set at 20-16 in favor of Towson, the Tigers capitalized on the time and finished set two on a 6-2 run for the 25-18 final.
  • In the third set, Morgan State jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Towson tied the action at 4-4. After taking a one-point lead, Towson ripped off five-straight points with Finckel back to serve, including one service ace. The Tigers continued to control the set and went up 13-6 before Morgan clawed back to make it 15-10.
  • Despite playing its second match of the day, Towson logged 11 of the final 12 points in the match for a 25-11 match-deciding win.

Behind the Numbers
  • Grassini and Wiers each hit over 60 percent, knocking down at .667 and .625 rates, respectively. For the match, Towson swung at a .337 rate.
  • Towson was strong from the service line, finishing with seven aces, including a pair from Jarome.
  • Camryn Allen led the Tigers with 11 digs while Grassini totaled four blocks in the match.
  • Towson opened the season with three-straight sweeps for the first time since going 6-0 to open 2016, all by 3-0 marks.
