Tigers Nipped in Opener at Rutgers Invitational

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Despite two sets requiring extra points, the Towson University women's volleyball team was nipped in four sets in its opener at the Rutgers Invitational against the host Scarlet Knights Saturday morning. 

Rutgers took its first win of the season 14-25, 26-24, 28-26, 25-22.

Towson (3-1) got double-digit kills from Olivia Finckel (18) and Emily Jarome (15). Marrisa Wonders posted a season-high 46 assists.

Rutgers (1-3) had 14 kills apiece from Tali Marmen and Anastasiia Maksimova. Inna Balyko finished with 45 assists.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers jumped out to an early 12-7 lead in the first set. Towson continued its run and built the advantage to 20-11 on kills from Jarome and Finckel twice.
  • Towson capped the first set on a 3-2 run for a 25-14 decision and the Tigers' 10th-straight victory this season.
  • Set two was much tighter, featuring six ties in the first 30 points. The Tigers trailed 20-17 before storming back to tie the set at 22-22, helped by freshman Lydia Wiers, who had two kills and a block during the run.
  • Facing set point, 24-23, the Tigers got the answer from Jarome on a Camryn Allen assist to tie the frame. The Scarlet Knights scored the next two points, however, tying the match at one set apiece.
  • Once again, Towson jumped out to a big lead, quickly taking a 10-4 advantage before a Rutgers timeout. The Tigers held Rutgers at bay until a five-point run tied the third set 14-14. 
  • Both teams tied three more times in the third set before the Tigers ran it to 25-24 on a Silvia Grassini kill. Rutgers rallied back to take the set 28-26.
  • Set four began with Towson jumping up 8-2 out of the gate and forcing a Rutgers timeout. Out of the pause, the Scarlet Knights posted seven of the next eight points to tie the fourth 9-9. The Tigers rebuilt to a 14-11 advantage, thanks in part to an ace from Jarome and kills from Grassini and Annie Ertz.
  • Later in the fourth, the teams tied 22-22 on assisted blocks from Grassini and Wonders. Rutgers scored the next three points for a 25-22 win and the match 3-1.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson hit for .169 in the match, including a .393 in the first set.
  • Finckel and Jarome led the match with their 18 and 15 respective kills. Wonders reset her season best with 46 assists.
  • The Tigers finished with eight and a half team blocks, thanks to five assisted from Wiers and Finckel each. Jarome and Grassini added two assisted blocks apiece.
  • Rutgers swung at a .158 percentage for the match, overcoming a .069 in the first set.
  • The Scarlet Knights used their size for 17.5 team blocks, including 11 assisted stops from Merle Weidt.
