Volleyball Sweeps Penguins in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. -- The Towson University women's volleyball team opened its first home match of the season in style, sweeping visiting Youngstown State 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-8) at SECU Arena Friday afternoon.

Towson (6-1) hit for .420 in the match, paced by senior middle blocker Silvia Grassini, who swung at a .615 percent rate, knocking down nine kills on 13 swings. Marrisa Wonders pushed up 23 assists while Camryn Allen had 17 digs. The Tigers finished with nine and a half blocks.

Youngstown State (4-4) was limited to a negative .022 hitting percentage with 16 kills and 18 errors on 89 attacks. Aleah Hughes paced the Penguins with seven kills. Libbie Darling had eight assists.

How it Happened
  • Towson wasted little time getting going on its home court for the first time this season, jumping out to a 6-0 lead, thanks to four combined blocks from Lydia Wiers, Emily Jarome, Olivia Finckel and Annie Ertz.
  • After a Towson service error, the Tigers logged another four-straight points before the Penguins called a timeout.
  • Midway through the first set, Youngstown State kept it interesting with a 5-1 run, cutting Towson's lead down to 14-8. The Tigers responded with a 5-1 run of their own, rebuilding a 19-9 advantage.
  • Later in the set, Youngstown State went on a 4-0 run, but it was too little, too late as Towson scored two of the final three points for a 25-16 decision.
  • Set two saw much of the same to begin as the Tigers went on a 10-0 run. Youngstown State halted the run with a 3-0 burst but it was short lived as Towson strung a 6-1 run together with multiple kills from each of Finckel, Wiers and Grassini and a 16-4 lead.
  • The Tigers closed the door on the second set with a 6-0 run that featured a pair of aces for a 25-8 finish.
  • Set three had the Tigers out early on a 17-3 lead, backed by a 13-0 run. The run was a combination of Youngstown State miscues and an efficient Tiger attack.
  • With much of the Tigers' bench on the court, Towson capped the match on a 6-2 run for a 25-8 third set decision.

Behind the Numbers
