Field Hockey Faces American in College Park Sunday

TOWSON, Md. – This weekend holds another nonconference matchup for the Towson University field hockey team in neutral territory.
 
Towson is set to face American on Sunday afternoon at the FH & Lax Complex at College Park. The game is part of the Terrapin Invitational hosted by Maryland each season. Sunday's game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network Plus and live stats are available on UMTerps.com. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
 
Last Time Out
The Tigers (0-4) are coming off a 5-0 loss to No. 4 Maryland on Wednesday afternoon. The defensive effort from the home team was apparent. The five goals scored by the Terrapins are the least scored in the last eight meetings. Before Wednesday, Maryland scored at least six goals against Towson in the last eight games, dating back to 1999.
 
Scouting the Tigers
Leading the offensive effort is freshman Georgia Beachley with two goals and one assist on the season. Samantha Aljets and Kathryn Parkinson have scored one apiece for the Tigers this year and Aljets has two assists, Beira Ho has one assist as well. Freshman goalkeeper Tess Okkerse has started all four games this year and recorded 25 saves. Hannah King and Kasey Bubel each have one defensive save so far this season.
 
Scouting the Eagles
American enters the game 2-3 after a 2-1 win over James Madison on Friday afternoon. Leading the Eagles are junior Noor Coenen and sophomore Hannah Moser with two goals each. Coenen also has two assist this season to lead the team. Freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter has held strong in the net starting all five games. She has 10 saves and 10 goals allowed, allowing 1.88 goals per game. American's win over JMU yesterday is its first victory since the season opener against New Hampshire. The Eagles lost three straight games against Richmond, Delaware and Old Dominion.
 
The American Series
Sunday will be the 39th meeting between the two teams. Towson has five wins in the series dating back to 1979, while the Eagles have 30 wins. The teams have come to a draw on three occasions. In the last 10 meetings American has won nine times. The last Towson win came in 2014, a 4-3 victory in College Park. In 2018 the Tigers fell 7-0 to the Eagles in Washington, D.C.
 
Looking Ahead
Towson returns home to the TU Field Hockey Complex for a Friday game against La Salle. Game time is set for 2 p.m., parking is open in Lot 20 beginning at 1 p.m. and admission is free. The game is also a student and staff appreciation theme.

Tigers in the Community
The Towson University athletics department deems community service as one of its highest priorities to give back to the Greater Baltimore area. For the seventh consecutive year, the department exceeded 10,000 hours of community service to the Greater Baltimore region, finishing with 11,162 hours of community service in the 2018-19 academic season. Towson ranked No. 1 nationally for community service and won the 2018 National Championship for Community Service through the Helper Helper NCAA Team Works Competition. Towson had a 97% participation rate, attended 118 community service opportunities and volunteered with 19 organizations. Towson won the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award from Susan G. Komen of Maryland.
