Wild Finish Leads Volleyball in Sweep of UNH

TOWSON, Md. -- It was a sweep with a twist as the Towson University women's volleyball team knocked off the University of New Hampshire in straight sets Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (10-2) dominated the first two sets with scores of 25-8 and 25-17, but the Wildcats rallied for the third set which featured 14 ties and nine lead changes for the Tigers claimed victory 33-31 to cap Towson's time at the Tiger Invitational.

Senior setter Marrisa Wonders paced Towson's offense with 38 assists in the three sets while Emily Jarome finished with a double-double on 15 kills and 10 digs. The Tigers opened up the match with a .636 hitting percentage in the first set.

UNH (10-4) finished second at the Tiger Invitational, backed by seven kills from Kennedi Smith and another six from Katie Jablonski. Emma Patlovich and Wren Mcaulay notched 11 assists apiece. Errors hurt the Wildcats, who hit .091 percent in the three setter.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers cracked open the first set with a 10-2 run with a bevy of attackers, including Annie Ertz, Olivia Finckel and a swinging kill from libero Camryn Allen.
  • Towson's offense continued to control the first set pace after ripping out to a 19-4 advantage. The Tigers capped the frame on a 6-3 run, finished off with a quick kill from rookie Lydia Wiers.
  • In the second set, the teams traded chances as UNH took a 5-4 lead early. Towson slowly built a lead utilizing small runs and limiting UNH's chances. A 4-0 burst broke open the action for a 21-14 Towson lead before UNH scored three of the next four points. Two kills from Jarome and another finisher from Wiers gave Towson the set 25-17.
  • Set three was a wild finish that finished with 14 ties and nine lead changes. Both sides were streaky early on before Towson strung together five of six points in the middle of the set, grabbing a 19-14 advantage. An 8-1 UNH run gave the Wildcats a 23-22 lead late in the frame. The match was tied nine times across the next grouping of points, with both sides landing kills but committing errors. Deadlocked at 31-31, Towson took a one-point lead after a Wildcat service error, while winning the set 33-31 after a UNH attack error.
Behind the Numbers
  • The Tigers limited UNH to a .091 hitting percentage in the match thanks to eight total blocks. Silvia Grassni accounted for four blocks while Wiers and Finckel chipped in three apiece.
  • Wonders pushed up 38 assists as Towson won its fourth-straight match by a 3-0 count. 
  • Four Tigers logged double-digit digs, led by Allen's 16. Rookie Ally Townsend posted 14 while Wonders and Jarome had 11 and 10, respectively.
  • Allen led the match with three service aces while freshman Asia Goins and sophomore Marija Tomasevic had one apiece. UNH's Kennedi Smith and Mcaulay landed one ace apiece.
  • Sunday's finisher marks the first time since the middle of the 2016 campaign that the Tigers have reeled off at least four straight sweeps after knocking down Delaware State, James Madison, William & Mary and UNCW in succession in straight sets.
  • Towson finished 3-0 at the Tiger Invitational after besting NJIT 3-0 and topping Loyola 3-0 Friday night at Reitz Arena.
