TOWSON, Md. – As fall practice continues for the Towson University women's lacrosse team, head coach
Sonia LaMonica has made an announcement to get the upcoming season underway.
The three student-athletes set to lead the Tigers in the 2020 year are
Sami Chenoweth,
Olivia Conti and
Carly Tellekamp.
"I'm excited to announce Sami, Carly and Olivia as captains this season," LaMonica said. "There is no question this team is hungry to prove themselves out of conference but especially without our ever competitive CAA conference. This trio is committed to leading that charge in a positive, determined and collaborative way, to allow this team to be the best it can possibly be."
Chenoweth is coming off a standout season where she led the nation in caused turnovers. The Manchester, Maryland native set a single-season record for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in caused turnovers with 64. Chenoweth was also selected to the All-CAA First Team, Tewaaraton Award Watch List and IWLCA First Team All-Mid-Atlantic Region. In 2019 the defender was second on the team in ground balls with 40 and won 10 draw controls.
Conti returns for her senior year after landing on the All-CAA First Team, IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Second Team and Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The 2019 Preseason Player of the Year finished the season with 41 caused turnovers and 39 ground balls. Against Saint Joseph's the Wantagh, New York native grabbed a season-best seven caused turnovers and picked up a season-high five ground balls against James Madison. Conti was a team captain last season alongside
Natalie Sulmonte and finished the year second in the CAA in caused turnovers per game with 2.41.
Tellekamp enters her fifth year in the Black and Gold after redshirting partially through last season. In 2019 the Hauppauge, New York native saw action in five games and scored five goals. At attack, Tellekamp scored twice against Georgetown and had assists against the Hoyas and Navy. She also scored once against Navy, Stony Brook and Loyola.
This weekend the Tigers get their first feel of action for the coming season as fall ball gets underway on Saturday against Johns Hopkins and Temple. Both scrimmages will be played at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium starting at 10 a.m.
