Jeter Makes Game-Winner, Mayo Posts Double-Double in Win Over JMU

TOWSON, Md. – Kionna Jeter grabbed the ball on an inbound play with 6.1 seconds to go and found space to make a layup, scoring the game-winner to lead Towson to victory over James Madison on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers took the win 76-75 over JMU, the Dukes were in first place heading into Sunday's game.
 
Jeter led the Tigers with 27 points, while Nukiya Mayo posted a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Q. Murray paced the Tigers with seven assists.
 
This was Towson's first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win of the season, and the Tigers move to 6-8 overall on the year.
 
How it Happened

  • Back and forth scoring started the first few minutes, Towson led 9-8 with 6:10 remaining in the first.
  • The Tigers then rolled out to a nine-point lead and it was all Tiger scoring continuing, ending the first period up 27-18.
  • Through the first half Towson was shooting 48.6 percent from the field, reaching a game-high lead of 21 points with 5:21 to go in the second quarter.
  • James Madison fought back in the final minutes of the second to close the gap, as the Tigers led 45-35 at halftime.
  • The third quarter saw much more of a fight from the Dukes, Towson led throughout but the road team had closed in only trailing by four with 1:34 to go in the period.
  • Towson started the fourth with a five-point lead, 58-55, before Kionna Jeter put the home team up 62-55 with 8:58 to go.
  • The Dukes responded strong, taking the lead with 6:01 on the clock, 66-65.
  • Ryan Holder tied the game up and the back and forth scoring ensued.
  • JMU took a three-point lead with 4:32 to go and both teams continued to tie the game or take a one-point lead.
  • With 1:03 remaining the score was tied 73-73, neither team scored in the following possessions until LaKaitlin Wright was fouled and made a free throw with 9.9 to go.
  • James Madison's Lexie Barrier took the lead back with two made free throws and six seconds left.
  • On the next play Jeter sealed the win, Kamiah Smalls missed a jumper with 1 second to go as the clock ran out.
     
Beyond the Box
  • Nukiya Mayo's double-double was her fourth of the season and 15th career. It was also her 12th game this season in double-figure scoring.
  • Mayo now has 20 career games with double-figure rebounding.
  • Kionna Jeter has scored in double digits dating back to last March. She has scored 10 or more points in 16 straight games.
  • Q. Murray had seven assists, her ninth game this year with at least five assists.
  • Towson shot 40 percent from the field for the third straight game and the sixth time this season.
  • Also in regards to shooting percentage, the Tigers shot 50 percent from three for the first time this season.

 
Looking Ahead
The Tigers hit the road for their first CAA road trip of the year, traveling to Charleston and UNCW this coming weekend.
