CHARLESTON, S.C. – Friday night the Towson University women's basketball team faced the College of Charleston on the road, coming out with a big road win of 79-62.
The Tigers were led by
Kionna Jeter with 22 points, while
Nukiya Mayo posted a double-double 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Q. Murray scored 13 to round out Towson's scoring leaders.
With the win the Black and Gold improve to 7-8 on the season and 2-2 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Tigers stay on the road for a game against UNCW on Sunday.
How it Happened
- Towson saw scoring across the board from seven out of nine players that saw the court in the first quarter, forcing an early timeout from the home team as the Tigers rolled out to a 7-0 lead.
- The road team was shooting 57.1 percent from the field in the first quarter, led by Nukiya Mayo with six points.
- At the end of one, Towson led 25-14.
- Charleston came roaring back in the second quarter, holding the Tigers to just five points in the period. The Cougars only scored nine as well.
- Entering halftime Towson was up 30-23, led by Q. Murray who had seven points.
- Deja Ford scored the first bucket of the second half, cutting Towson's lead to four. The Tigers responded and kicked back out to a 10-point lead with 6:05 remaining in the third quarter.
- With 1:45 to go in the third, the road team was leading by 21 points, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
- Once again, Charleston came back with a fight, cutting the lead to 11 with 7:02 to go and plenty of time to close the gap.
- The next play series practically secured the game for Towson, as Kionna Jeter drained a three and then the Tigers forced a team turnover on the Cougars inbounding the ball.
- After the five-second turnover, Mayo went up for a layup that rolled out, Tess Borgosz grabbed the board and put it back in. Towson was up by 16 with 6:11 to go.
- The Cougars scored seven more times in the following six minutes, including free throws, but the Tigers saw two three's from Jeter, a free throw and a pair of layups to seal it.
Beyond the Box
- Kionna Jeter has scored in double figures for 17 straight games as of Friday night, dating back to last March. This was her fifth game this season with 20 or more points.
- Nukiya Mayo has recorded her fifth double-double of the season and 16th in her career. Her 17 points are the 13th night this season with 10 or more.
- Mayo now has 21 career games with 10 or more rebounds.
- Q. Murray finished her seventh game of the year in double-digit scoring with 13 points.
