TOWSON, Md. – Friday night ended in an 81-68 win for the Towson University women's basketball team.
Led by senior
Nukiya Mayo with yet another double-double, 21 points and 10 rebounds, the Tigers led the game for 36 minutes and reached a peak lead of 18 points.
Also in double figures were
Kionna Jeter and
Q. Murray with 16 points apiece, Jeter grabbed seven rebounds and Murray dished out seven assists.
The Tigers improve to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
How it Happened
- Northeastern scored the first points of the game but the Tigers came roaring back, with a 10-0 run to take the lead and hold onto it.
- At the end of the first, Towson led 22-9 holding the road team to 3-of-14 shooting.
- Starting the second quarter, the Huskies went on an 11-4 run cutting the lead to a 26-20 advantage for Towson.
- Spurred by Jeter the Tigers went out to a 39-30 lead. A couple of tough calls would change the course of the final minute, taking away one point from Towson after the officials changed a three-point bucket from Jeter to a two.
- Northeastern scored to cut the Towson leads to six entering the halftime, 38-32.
- The home team came out with force in the third to extend the lead to 18 points by the final second. Nukiya Mayo scored 10 of Towson's 27 points in the third, as the Tigers shot 52.4 percent from the field.
- A very slow performance on both ends started in the fourth, with 4:54 to go Towson led 67-59, following a Northeastern 12-2 run.
- The Tigers turned the jets back on with a 12-4 run in the next three minutes. Shavonne Smith, Q. Murray, Ryan Holder and Jeter all scored for the Black and Gold putting the game out of reach.
Beyond the Box
- Nukiya Mayo has recorded her fifth straight double-double tonight and her seventh on the year.
- Mayo has five games with 20 or more this season.
- Kionna Jeter, with 16 points, has now scored in double-figures in 19 straight games dating back to last March.
- Q. Murray also tallied 16 points, her eighth night of the year in double digits and had seven assists for the fourth time in the last six games.
- Murray has now recorded 10 games this season with five or more assists.
- This is Towson's second straight win at home over a team in or tied for first place of the CAA this season. It is also the Tigers' second consecutive win over Northeastern at SECU Arena.
- Towson shot 44.3 percent from the field, the fourth conference game this season with 40 or better shooting percentage.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers host Hofstra on Sunday at 2 p.m. at SECU Arena, it is the annual Special Olympics game.
