Towson Baseball, TAF Establishes Matt Golczewski Home Bullpen Memorial

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team and the Tiger Athletic Fund have established the Matt Golczewski Home Bullpen Memorial in honor of Matt Golczewski '17.

Golczewski, a Bel Air native who pitched for Towson from 2014-17, passed away from his battle with cancer in March 2020 after being diagnosed the previous year.  He had graduated from Towson in 2017 with a degree in economics and finance and was working for JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Delaware.  Matt Golczewski was a strong player and a better person with a tireless work ethic and determination.

Members of the Golczewski family and the Towson team gathered for a socially-distanced ceremony at John B. Schuerholz Park.  The family talked about Matt as all in attendance honored his memory.  The home bullpen will have Golczewski's #9 jersey placed on the wall starting in the 2021 season.

"We are so appreciative of everything the Golczewski Family has done to benefit our program in the face of such personal tragedy," said Towson associate head coach Miles Miller.  "They have showed nothing but class and selflessness through this entire year and I have been honored to get to know them and learn about Matt and his life.  He was a great ambassador for our program, and we will remain dedicated to carrying on his legacy as a tough yet caring leader who always put his friends, family, and teammates first."

In Matt's memory, the Golczewski family has made a donation for field improvements to Schuerholz Park as part of continuing renovations for the home of Towson baseball.

This year, Towson baseball started the Matt Golczewski Award for Pitching Staff Member of the Year.  The recipient in 2020 is Austin Weber.

"Austin Weber established himself as a leader on our pitching staff who believes in our program and will do anything he can to help us elevate Towson Baseball to the level we want to reach," said Miller.  "He sets the tone for us with his toughness and his love for the challenge of facing top competition.  Austin always wants the ball, but he is equally invested in the success of his teammates when he is not on the mound."
