Towson Men's Basketball Completes Challenging 2020-21 Non-Conference Schedule

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team has announced the remainder of the 2020-21 non-conference season as games as set to begin in two weeks.

Earlier, Towson announced that it would begin the 2020-21 campaign at the Mohegan Sun, playing three games as part of the "Bubbleville" Pod.  The Tigers will play St. Bonaventure on Nov. 25th, Rhode Island on Nov. 26th and Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 27th.

The remainder of the non-conference schedule will consist of several local opponents, including four home games at SECU Arena.  This completes a non-conference slate with nine contests scheduled between Nov. 25th and Dec. 22nd.

"We have a challenging non-conference schedule that will prepare us well for Colonial Athletic Association play," said Towson head coach Pat Skerry. "We have the opportunity to compete against three good local programs and we are playing five Athletic 10 squads, one of the best basketball leagues in the country.  We are thankful that our university and our administration has supported us not only in putting this strong schedule together, but for supporting us throughout these difficult times.  We look forward to competing and getting better throughout the year while hopefully remaining healthy."

All game times will be announced at a later date.  Games and dates are subject to change.

The men's basketball team has its first home game on Thurs., Dec. 3rd vs. Baltimore rival Coppin State, the first of three games in five days.  The Tigers take a short trek to Catonsville for a Sat., Dec. 5th game at UMBC, then return to SECU to rematch against George Washington on Mon., Dec. 7th.

After a break for finals, Towson gets set for two more home games, hosting La Salle on Dec. 16th and crosstown-rival Morgan State on Dec. 19th.

The non-conference schedule wraps up with a trip to Fairfax, Virginia with a game between Towson and George Mason on Dec. 22nd.

St. Bonaventure went 19-12 last year and was in the Atlantic-10 Second Round of the tournament before the season cancelation.  The Bonnies have won at least 18 games each year since the 2013-14 season.

Rhode Island is coming off its third 20+ win season in the last four years.  The Rams were 21-9 last year, including a 13-5 record in the Atlantic-10.  Towson's director of player development, Parfait Bitee, and director of operations, Jordan Malkin, are URI graduates while Skerry and associate head coach Kevin Clark each served as assistant coaches for the Rams from 2007-10 and 2004-11 respectively.

Stephen F. Austin is coming off one of its best years in school history, finishing 28-3 overall including a victory at Duke and a 19-1 tally in the Southland Conference.

Coppin State, under fourth-year coach Juan Dixon, is coming off its best season since 2013-14 with 11 victories last year.  This is the first meeting between the two since 2015, an 81-77 overtime thriller in Baltimore.

Towson and UMBC have played every year since 2008, with Towson having a 40-20 edge, and a seven-game win streak, in a series that began in 1970.  The Retrievers have won at least 16 games in each of the past four seasons.

This will be the third straight year that Towson will play GW, coming off a 72-58 win last year.  GW went 12-20 last season under first-year head coach Jamion Christian.

A second straight opponent out of the Atlantic 10, La Salle went 10-21 last year and will come to Towson for the first time since 2004.  Towson battled the Explorers in Atlantic City in 2018, narrowly falling 57-51.

Another chapter in the Towson-Morgan State rivalry will be written this year, the eighth consecutive year the two teams have met.  With Towson holding a 17-14 lead in the all-time series, Morgan State won 15 games last year, tied for the most in a season since 2012-13.

Towson and George Mason will play its first game against each other since 2016.  Towson has won the last three games against a George Mason team that has picked up at least 16 victories in each of the past three years.
