TOWSON, Md. – Friday night the Towson University women's basketball team showed up for yet another high-scoring affair, taking down Salem 113-63 at home. For the second-straight appearance the Tigers have scored at least 100 points and tonight they set the program record for points in a single game.
The Tigers were led by a trio of players who all scored 17 points,
Kionna Jeter,
Allie Kubek and
Aleah Nelson, while Kubek grabbed a double-double pacing the team with 10 rebounds.
Narrie Dodson and
Shavonne Smith each chipped in 12 points while
Skye Williams dropped 10, the first time Towson has seen seven players in double figures in recent history.
Towson improves to 4-1 on the season and will host Morgan State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in SECU Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Towson started out quickly taking a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Salem scored once before the Black and Gold took a 14-point lead with 5:44 to go in the first quarter.
- The home team saw continued scoring while heavy rebounding kept possession in their favor, leading by a strong 19 points at the end of the first.
- Salem broke the 20-point mark with 7:40 to go in the second, and Towson held the road team at that mark until 2:07 remained on the clock, leading 48-22.
- Layups by Tarriyonna Gary and Kiara Johnson put the home team ahead by a whopping 32 points entering the locker room.
- Aleah Nelson scored a layup two minutes into the third quarter extending the lead to 38 points and putting the gap further out for Salem to close.
- The road Tigers would never break past a 31-point lead in the middle of the third, as Towson went on to lead by 57 points with 5:05 remaining.
BEYOND THE BOX
- Towson's scoring capabilities this season are showing through with seven players in double figures, including three off the bench, and reaching 113 points for the first time in program history.
- Today's 63 rebounds are a season high for the Tigers, 10 more than the previous high from this season.
- Allie Kubek now has two double-doubles under her belt, just five games into her college career. She leads the Tigers in rebounding with 7.6 boards a night on average. As a rookie she is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 13.4 points per game.
- Kionna Jeter has recorded her 61st career game in double-digit scoring. The redshirt-senior has scored 10 or more points dating back to last season in conference action. She continues to lead the team offensively with 24 points per game.
- Aleah Nelson's 17 points are her fifth game this season in double figures. The guard continues to hold the team lead in assists with 6.2 per game.
- Shavonne Smith has shown her game improvement with another night in double figures, her 12 points earned her fourth game this season with 10 or more and is her seventh career appearance in double figures.
- Skye Williams has seen three games now with double-digit points.
- Narrie Dodson saw her first appearance with the Tigers today and came out strong dropping 12 points in 16 minutes of action with two steals and a rebound. Kiara Johnson also saw her first outing in the Black and Gold and scored two buckets.
LOOKING AHEAD
Towson is scheduled to host Morgan State on Sunday at 2 p.m. and then Saint Francis, next Tuesday, at 2 p.m. Both games will be played in SECU Arena and will be streamed on FloSports.com.
