Jeter, Nelson and Kubek Drop Double Figures in Loss at No. 14 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md.  – Three players in double figures, and a strong third quarter performance from Kionna Jeter, was not enough for the Towson University women's basketball team on Thursday night as the Tigers fell at No. 14 Maryland, 112-78.
 
Towson was led by redshirt-senior Jeter with 28 points, while Aleah Nelson scored 18 and Allie Kubek dropped 11. Kubek also came up strong on rebounds with seven, joined by LaKaitlin Wright who had seven as well.
 
The Tigers continue their week on the road, traveling to face Longwood on Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Towson won the tip and Kionna Jeter went on to score the opening bucket, 14 seconds into the game. Three minutes in the game was 11-6 with a Maryland advantage, and as the game played out, the Tigers would never get within five points of tying the game up again.
  • The first quarter saw the Terps take a 28-8 lead before Towson saw scoring from Aleah Nelson, Shavonne Smith and Allie Kubek to enter the end of the period 30-14.
  • Kubek scored the first bucket of the second period, cutting the deficit to 14 points, before a run from the home team.
  • Maryland's Katie Benzan started a 9-0 run that lasted for two minutes and 30 seconds. With 6:14 to go, Tess Borgosz broke the scoring skid with a jumper but the Tigers trailed 42-19.
  • With three minutes to go in the second, Bianca Glover put in a layup cutting the lead to 25 points. Entering the half, Towson trailed 55-30.
  • Jeter struck fire in the third period, where she scored 20 points and helped put the Tigers within 17 points of tying it up.
  • Shavonne Smith made two free throws in the final 60 seconds of the third, cutting the lead to 76-59.
  • The Terps continued to put it away in the fourth, trading baskets on both ends, going up 80-63 with 9:12 on the clock.
  • Defense showed up and the offense was rolling as Jeter and Nelson scored six straight, cutting the lead to 13 points with eight minutes to go.
  • Maryland's Diamond Miller responded with a three 15 seconds later and continued a spurt that would extend the home team's lead to 90-68 with 6:17 on the clock. 
BEYOND THE BOX
  • Tonight's game is the 11th- straight performance from Kionna Jeter with 10 or more points. The guard has now scored 1,169 career points in her time at Towson.
  • Aleah Nelson's 18 points are a career-high, she now has three straight games in double-figures.
  • Allie Kubek's 11 points are her second night in a row scoring double digits. The rookie also grabbed seven rebounds; she is leading the Tigers in rebounding average.

Up next for the Tigers is a road trip to Farmville, Virginia to face Longwood on Saturday afternoon. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
