Towson Sets Single-Game Scoring Record in Win Over Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va.  – Saturday afternoon the Towson University women's basketball team capped a three-game road swing at Longwood, coming out with a strong victory, 108-89.

The Tigers were led by Kionna Jeter who scored 32 points while Shavonne Smith dropped a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds. Towson also had 17 points from rookie Allie Kubek, 11 from Skye Williams and 10 from both Aleah Nelson and Tarriyonna Gary.

Towson wraps the week up with a 3-1 record overall after playing three games on the road this week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams came out firing on all cylinders, trading baskets on both ends to start the game and it was back-and-forth scoring for several minutes.
  • Defense on both ends was strong with several turnovers for both Towson and Longwood in the full first half. With 5:58 to go in the first, Towson led 14-13 and the home team kept it close, taking a 21-20 lead with 3:08 on the clock.
  • A flurry of free throws in the final two minutes continued the trading of scores, entering the quarter break Towson led 32-28.
  • The second quarter saw the dog fight continue, baskets on each end being made 10 seconds after another.
  • Towson rolled out to a nine-point lead on a 9-0 run, taking a 43-34 lead with 6:03 to go in the first half. Longwood responded and cut the lead to six, hanging around as the Tigers had to push just to hold their lead.
  • Entering the locker room, the road team was ahead 51-45.
  • No surprise, the third period was another battle. Lancers' Akila Smith scored the opening bucket of the second half, cutting the lead to 51-47. Baskets were traded again on both ends from Smith and Jeter as the home team hung around.
  • With 8:48 to go, Towson led 56-48, before a little spurt from the Tigers changed the tempo for the remainder of the game.
  • Starting with an Allie Kubek layup at the 8:24 mark, the road team went on a 10-4 run that was stopped at 6:13 when Longwood cut the lead to 66-54.
  • Shavonne Smith put in a layup to extend the lead to 14, and the final two minutes saw an 8-2 run to give the Tigers an 82-65 advantage.
  • In full Jeter style, she stole the ball one second into the fourth period and scored the opening bucket of the final stanza.
  • Towson rolled out to an 88-71 lead with 8:06 left in the game and Longwood fought back, holding on and trailing by 13 with 6:10 on the clock.
  • That was the closest the Lancers would get to tying the game up, even though they continued to score down the stretch the Tigers always had a response.
  • Smith scored the historic mark of the 100th point with 3:06 to go as Towson secured the win.
BEYOND THE BOX
  • It was a career day for several of Towson's players, starting with Kionna Jeter who matched her career-high 32 points. It was the first time since Nov. 29, 2019 that a Towson player has scored 30 or more points in a game.
  • Shavonne Smith recorded her first career double-double and recorded her career-high in scoring for the second time this week. On Monday night she scored 19 points and today she dropped 23, her first career 20-point game and her career high in rebounds with 14.
  • Allie Kubek did the same thing, recorded a brand new career-high in scoring today with 17 points after scoring 15 on Monday. She has scored in double figures in all games this week. Kubek shot 8-of-12 from the field today and also grabbed seven rebounds. The rookie has a team-best 28 rebounds.
  • Tarriyonna Gary scored her first double digit game in collegiate action with 10 points, she also grabbed six rebounds.
  • To round out the scoring festivities, Aleah Nelson also dropped 10 points and Skye Williams contributed 11, Nelson recorded her fourth game with at least 10 points and Williams now has two double-figure scoring appearances this season.
  • Towson saw six players score in double figures for the first time in recent history.
  • At the line the Tigers shot 81 percent, the best free throw shooting percentage by the team this season so far.
