Mayo Posts Double-Double, Jeter Scores 1,000th in Win Over Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – Sunday afternoon recorded more history for the Towson University women's basketball team with an 83-72 win over Charleston.

Senior Nukiya Mayo led the Tigers with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt-junior Kionna Jeter scored 19 points, including her 1,000th career point on a jumper in the third quarter. Point guard Q. Murray also dropped 19 and led the team in assists with eight.

The Tigers improve to 12-11 on the season and 7-5 in conference play, moving up to fourth place in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

How it Happened
  • The first period saw a slow start similar to Friday's game against UNCW.
  • With 6:01 to go in the first the Tigers led by two, up 9-7, before breaking out on a 10-0 run taking a 19-7 lead with 1:34 to go.
  • The Cougars would not lead again for the rest of the game, but cut it close several times. Towson led by 10 with a few minutes remaining in the first half and Charleston came within seven of tying it up.
  • Entering the locker room the home team was leading 46-35.
  • Charleston went on a 6-2 run to start the second half, forcing a Towson timeout as the road team gained traction to catch up.
  • Following the break the Tigers went on a 12-0 run and took a 21-point lead of 62-41 with 4:14 remaining in the third.
  • Towson remained in a double-figure lead until six minutes remained on the clock and Tyler Collins hit a three cutting the lead to nine.
  • The Cougars went to the line several times late in the fourth, with opportunities to close the gap, but the Tigers continued to score. With 50 seconds left Nukiya Mayo made a layup putting the lead at 11 and the game out of reach.
Beyond the Box
  • Kionna Jeter becomes the second player this season to record 1,000 career points. Jeter accomplished this feat in less than two seasons of Division I basketball.
  • Jeter is the second player under Diane Richardson's tenure at Towson to score 1,000 points.
  • Nukiya Mayo recorded her ninth double-double today, she has now 20 career double-doubles.
  • Mayo also finished her seventh game of the year with 20 points or more. She has 51 career games in double-figures.
  • Q. Murray's 19 points are her 13th time this season with 10 or more. It was also her 13th game with at least five assists as she recorded eight.
  • The Tigers have now won six straight at home dating back to January 12 win over Chestnut Hill.
  • Towson has now completed a CAA sweep of Charleston for the second straight season.
Looking Ahead
Towson hits the road this week for a contest at Hofstra on Friday night and a tough CAA battle at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon in Boston.
