Murray Scores 1,000th Point, Towson Defeats Hofstra on the Road

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Friday night the Towson University women's basketball team faced Hofstra on the road, coming out with a 71-54 win over the Pride.
 
The Tigers were led by senior Nukiya Mayo with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Kionna Jeter posted 17 points while Q. Murray dropped 13 and 12 assists, LaKaitlin Wright also finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The win was highlighted by 1,000 points from Murray, the third player this season to record the career mark. Towson improves to 13-11 overall and 8-5 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play.
 
How it Happened
  • It was yet again a slower start for both teams as Towson led 5-2 at the first media timeout with 4:50 to go in the first quarter.
  • Towson extended its lead but the Pride came out strong following the media and tied the game up, eventually taking a two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, shooting 42 percent from the field.
  • Hofstra continued firing on all cylinders, both teams trading baskets as Towson led 19-18 with 8:13 to go in the quarter.
  • Towson trailed by five before Kionna Jeter and Nukiya Mayo drained back to back threes, the Tigers took a 28-25 lead forcing a Hofstra timeout.
  • At halftime the score was tied 30-30.
  • Towson outscored the Pride 21 to 11 in the third quarter as Mayo led the road team with seven points, she and Ryan Holder had four rebounds each in the period.
  • With 5:52 to go in the third the Tigers went on a 7-0 run taking an eight-point lead.
  • Hofstra cut into the lead but Towson continued to score as Q. Murray made a layup putting the Black and Gold up by 12 with 1:08 to go.
  • The Tigers led by nine to start the fourth quarter and the Pride cut it to seven before Towson went on an 11-3 run, taking a 13-point lead with 4:09 on the clock.
  • LaKaitlin Wright made a second-chance layup off an offensive rebound with 2:30 to go and put Towson up by 13 once again, sealing the win. Hofstra scored once in the final 90 seconds.
Beyond the Box
  • Q. Murray becomes the 19th player in Towson women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points. Murray is the third player this season and under Diane Richardson's tenure at Towson to achieve the mark.
  • Murray also recorded a career-high in assists with 12.
  • Nukiya Mayo recorded her 10th double-double of the season. It was also her eighth game of the year with 20 points or more.
  • LaKaitlin Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was a career high in points for the center and matched her career-best in rebounds.
  • Kionna Jeter scored 17 for her 23rd game in double-figures and matched her season high in steals with six.
  • This is the first time in at least the last seven seasons that Towson has had three players record a double-double.
  • Today's win over Hofstra saw four players in double figures, the fourth time this has happened this season. The Tigers are 4-0 with four players scoring 10 or more points.
Looking Ahead
Towson travels to face Northeastern in a key CAA game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
