Softball Falls in Extra Innings to East Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - It was a back and forth game for the Towson University softball team Sunday afternoon against host team East Carolina in the Pirate Invitational.

The game was tied at 3-3 so extra innings had to be played before the Tigers fell 6-5 to ECU inside ECU Softball Stadium.

How it Happened
  • Towson took an early 1-0 lead after Nicole Kidwiler reached base on a bunt and later stole to second then Julia Smith-Harrington reached base on a throwing error allowing Kidwiler to score. (1-0 Tigers)
  • ECU settled the score in the bottom of the first after a single by Tate McClellan scored Rachel McCollum.
  • The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third after Kidwiler singled to third and a single by Julia Smith-Harrington later scored her.
  • The Pirates then took a 3-2 lead after a serious of events that started with MCollum reaching base on a single.
  • Towson tied the game in the top of sixth when Lindsey Toneygay got the Tigers rolling by reaching base on a single to left field. With one out, Kidwiler grounded out to second base but all the runners on base advanced and Julia Jackson scored for Towson.
  • Towson took a two-run lead in extra innings after Madison Wilson singled to center field.
  • ECU's McCollum homered in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 6-5 finish.
Behind the Numbers
  • Smith-Harrington pitched the entire game with three strikeouts and moves to 2-1 on the season.
  • Sara Johnson led the team in doubles.
  • Swistock improves her hit streak to four games.
Up Next
Towson has one more road tournament this weekend, Feb. 28-29 in Washington, D.C. The Tigers will participate in the Colonial Classic, hosted by Georgetown. Towson will open the tournament on Friday, Feb. 28 against Princeton inside the Shirley Povich Field at noon.
