TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team is saddened by the loss of
Matt Golczewski, 2017 graduate and former Tiger pitcher, who passed away from his battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 10
th.
Golczewski was diagnosed with cancer late last year. He came to this year's Towson Baseball First Pitch Dinner where the team established the
Matt Golczewski Pitching Award, for the team's top pitcher, in his honor.
The Patterson Mill graduate and Bel Air native pitched in 44 games for Towson from 2014-17, throwing a total of 112.2 innings and striking out 57. He graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in economics and finance and went on to work for JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Delaware.
Golczewski will be remembered as a great competitor and a better person. All who knew him admired his work ethic and determination, which will be remembered by all those who wear Black & Gold. The 2020 season is dedicated to Golczewski and Laura Tyner.
During the First Pitch Dinner, interim head coach
Miles Miller gave this speech in honor of Golczewski:
I care deeply about the pitchers who put up with me each day and I know that previous pitching coaches in this program feel the same way about the players who they coached. At some point I will have moved on from this program, and when that happens, I would hope that the next guy would take care of my guys as if they were his own, because we are all in the same fraternity here.
One of our guys has been fighting a pretty serious condition this year. I did not coach Matt Golczewski. Missed him by a year. I did coach some of his teammates and as I got to know Matt, I reached out to some of them to ask about him – how he was doing and what kind of man and teammate he was. They said things like:
"One of the best guys I know in all aspects of life."
"Incredibly intelligent and always brings an unbiased opinion and voice of reason."
"True definition of a teammate. He only cared about making our team better."
"A guy you should imitate on and off the field. Someone who brings positive energy everyday but is also willing to tell it to you straight."
"A pleasure to be around, especially on the daily grind of the college baseball season."
I can't imagine what Matt, his family, friends, and teammates are going through – but I know that you seem to embody everything we want in a pitcher in this program.
We haven't given out team awards much since I've been here. We feel that it is time for that to change. Starting this year, the pitcher who most embodies the traits you have exhibited – courage, passion, selflessness, toughness, intelligence, and investment in the team and his teammates – will receive the Matt Golczewski Award for Pitching Staff Member of the Year.
