Last week, someone on Twitter posted an all-time Syracuse lacrosse team. Which led others to post about their teams' all-timers. Towson lacrosse SID
John Stark and Tigers hall of famer and all-time leading goal scorer Glenn Smith posted theirs. This led senior associate athletic director at Towson
Mike Gathagan to email me and say what about yours.
Since I am writing several blogs a week, my next three will be my all-time teams in the three sports that I broadcast, football, men's basketball and men's lacrosse.
I came to Towson as a freshman in 1978, and graduated in 1983 (I know that's five years, you don't have to remind me). I broadcasted many games on then WCVT from 1979-83, and then came back as play-by-play man in 1991. My lists will only include players that I covered during those years.
We will start today with my all-time Tiger men's basketball team. My list is the 10 best players that I covered regardless of position. So it won't be a starting five of two guards, two forwards and a center, and then a second five of two guards, two forwards and a center. It's just the 10 best.
There are a couple of players not on my list, because I really didn't cover most or any of their careers. Both these players would probably be on any all-time roster of Tiger greats. Bill Leonard and Kurk Lee. I broadcasted a sprinkling of Bill's first couple of seasons, and I was gone during Kurk's two years. I just had to mention them because they are in this time frame I am talking about, and they are without a doubt two of Towson's all-timers.
So here are the first five for my top 10 Towson basketball players in alphabetical order.
1.
Scooter Alexander- Tigers third all-time leading scorer. Was rookie of the year in the East Coast Conference. 1
st team All Big South in his sophomore and junior years. Helped lead the Tigers to a win over St. John's in the Preseason NIT. He was just a guy who knew how to get the ball in the basket. Also is sixth on the all-time Tiger steal list. 1992 ECC tournament MVP. He was a character whose smile would light up a room. May be my all-time favorite player.
2.
Jerrelle Benimon - Two time CAA Player of the Year, and one of if not the most dominant players in school history. Jerrelle could just about do it all. Score inside, score outside, rebound, run the offense, there just wasn't much he couldn't do. Transferred from Georgetown after his sophomore year and had just a tremendous two seasons at Towson and averaged 18 points per game and 11.2 rebounds per game. Yep he averaged a double-double. He returned my Kindle to me when I left it in the bathroom of the Portland, Oregon airport.
3.
Ralph Biggs - The first time I saw Ralph I said really? Ralph was about 6'5 and weighed about 140 pounds. I'm not kidding. But boy could he play. Ralph was twice named Towson Male Athlete of the Year. The kid could jump out a building. In 1998 he was selected to the NCAA dunk contest at the Final Four. Was the third leading scorer in America East in his junior and senior years. Always had a big smile on his face
4.
Ralph Blalock - Here is one stat that says it all about Ralph: He was a shooting guard who averaged 50.2 percent from the field. Barely played his freshman year and ended up scoring 1,498 points. In 1995, he hit a game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat West Virginia. He was all-conference in his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was as smooth a player as Towson has ever had. He may also be the quietest guy to ever put on a Towson uniform.
5.
Devin Boyd - Tigers all-time leading scorer with exactly 2,000 points. The amazing part of that is that he spent his first two years feeding Kurk Lee. He is also the Tigers all-time leader in assists with 436. 1991 Big South Player of the Year. Great free throw shooter who got to the line a lot. Team captain for three years. Had 20 points at halftime against Colorado in the first game of the year, then broke his arm in the first minute of the second half and missed the rest of the year. Just a dynamic all-around player. Great teammate and great leader. Bus trips were never louder on the road after wins then with Devin. Would constantly lead the team in cheers. Just the best.
