11-Run Fourth Inning Sends Towson Baseball to Dominant Win vs. UMBC

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team had one of its top offensive performances in program history in the 2020 home opener, crushing UMBC 21-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

Towson (3-7) rallied from down three vs. UMBC (1-8) with an 11-run fourth inning, the most runs in a single inning since Apr. 26, 2011.  Adding 10 more runs in the game, including five in the fifth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth, Towson earned a 17-run victory over its in-county rival.

Key Stats:
  • Of Towson's nine starting lineup batters, eight had RBI, seven hit safely and eight scored runs. Seven had multi-run games, four had multiple RBI.
  • Towson compiled its 21 runs off 13 hits, 13 walks, four hit-by-pitches and a pair of UMBC errors.
  • Brad Powers came a triple shy of the cycle, finishing 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, a double, four runs, six RBI and a walk.  Behind him in the lineup was Burke Camper who put together a 2-for-3 day with both hits being doubles, having two runs, four RBI and two walks.  Javon Fields reached base five times off a 2-for-3 day and three walks, scoring four runs and driving in two more.
  • On the mound, Kody Reeser went two perfect innings in his start, striking out two.  The win went to reliever Austin Weber (1-0), who pitched 1.1 innings without a run.  The final four innings had one pitcher each with a scoreless inning: in order, Pete Marchineck, Teddy Blumenauer, Loy Hickmon and Cam Clark.
  • For UMBC, Christian Torres went 1-for-4, having a three-run double in the third inning.  Starter Gabe Delgado (0-2), who allowed five runs in 3.1 innings, striking out two.
How It Happened:
  • Kody Reeser began the game with two consecutive 1-2-3 innings on the mound.  After a pitching change in the third, UMBC took the lead on a Christian Torres three-run double, all unearned runs due to an earlier error.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Towson tied the game with a pair of hard hits.  After back-to-back singles from Matt Arceo and Javon Fields, Brad Powers crushed a ball down the left field line for a two-run double.  Next batter, Burke Camper also sent a ball to deep left, scoring Powers for a tie game.
  • The inning continued as the Tigers got the bases loaded with one out.  Jacob Terao and Colin Conroy each got hit by pitches for two runs.  Next batter, a wild pitch brough home another run, then an error re-loaded the bases.  Javon Fields reached on a bunt single for another run, with a second run coming home on the subsequent throwing error.  Powers came back up and hit a moon shot to left-center for a three-run home run, completing an 11-run inning for the Tigers.  Towson led 11-3.
  • After UMBC got a run back, Towson continued to light up the scoreboard.  Three free passes loaded the bases with no one out.  A flare off the bat of Areco advanced everyone a base on the RBI single.  The following three Tigers all walked for RBI base on balls.  Nick Tiano added another run off a fielder's choice to complete a five-run inning as Towson led 16-4.
  • As the Towson bullpen held in the final innings, Towson tacked on another run in the seventh off an RBI ground out from Brandon Austin.  Four more came in the eighth, as Towson got the bases loaded with no outs.  Two batters later, Camper hit a two-run double to left, then two batters later after him, Austin hit a frozen rope single for two more runs across as the Tigers led 21-4, the eventual final score.
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Black & Gold score 21 runs in a game for the first time since a 21-9 home victory over Delaware State on Apr. 27, 2011.  The previous day, the Tigers defeated UMES 26-7 at home.
  • Towson's 11-run fourth inning is the most amount of runs in an inning since Apr. 26, 2011, when the Tigers put up 13 runs in the sixth inning against UMES in a 26-7 victory.
  • The 11-run inning is the first 10+ run frame for Towson since Apr. 4, 2017 when the Tigers had 10 runs in the opening inning at George Mason, a 14-2 victory for the Black & Gold.
  • Colin Conroy increased his hitting streak to six consecutive games with a single in the eighth.
  • Javon Fields had hit fifth multi-hit game of the year while Burke Camper had his third.
  • This was the third straight victory for Towson over UMBC and the most lopsided win in the history of a series that dates back to 1985.

The Tigers host Lafayette for their first home weekend, beginning with a Friday, March 6th matchup at 2 p.m.
