Towson Baseball Walks Off to Win Series Opener vs. Lafayette

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team earned its first walk-off win of the season as Jacob Terao hit the game-winning, two-out RBI single to left to send the Tigers to a 6-5 victory over Lafayette.

Towson (4-7) came back twice while down to Lafayette (3-8) with multi-run innings in the fourth and fifth.  After the Leopards tied the game in the top of the ninth, Terao came up with two on and two out, hitting a hard-bouncer through the left side, bringing home Nick Brown for the walk-off win.

Key Stats:
  • Towson wins its second game in a row and improves to 2-0 at home.
  • Jacob Terao went 2-for-4 with a run scored and the game-winning RBI.  Matt Arceo hit a go-ahead double in the bottom of the fifth to finish 2-for-4 with a run while Brad Powers was 1-for-4 with a two-run triple and a run scored.
  • Towson starter Josh Seils had a no decision, going 4.2 innings with four runs, just one earned, and six strikeouts.  Cam Clark and Austin Weber had scoreless relief outings, going 2.2 and 0.2 innings respectively.  The win went to Jake Pecilunas (1-0), despite the blown save, off pitching the ninth with a run allowed and a strikeout.
  • For Lafayette, Dylan Minghini hit 4-for-5, a triple shy of the cycle, with a home run and two runs scored.  JP Woodward went six full in his start with five runs and six strikeouts with the loss going to Jordan Yoder (1-1), going 2.2 innings in relief with a run and five strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • The game started as a duel between the two starting pitchers, with each Josh Seils and JP Woodward going scoreless in the opening three innings.
  • In the fourth, Lafayette took advantage of a pair of Towson errors and a trio of free passes, scoring three runs for a 3-0 lead.
  • Towson responded in the following half-inning, starting with first and second and no out.  Two batters later, Brad Powers scorched a ball into right-center for a two-run triple.  Burke Camper followed with a sacrifice fly to right, tying the game at 3-3.
  • Lafayette retook the lead in the top of the fifth off a solo home run by Dylan Minghini, putting the visitors up 4-3.
  • The Tigers picked up first and second with one away in the bottom of the fifth.  After a strikeout, Matt Arceo launched a ball over the right fielder's head for a two-run double, giving Towson the 5-4 lead.
  • Towson's defense aided the cause in the sixth and seventh innings, with a diving snare on a ground ball to first by Powers in the sixth and a diving catch in left by Arceo, to keep the lead.
  • Lafayette pieced together a Mark Glover double and a Pete Ciuffreda RBI single with two outs in the ninth to force Towson to bat at 5-5.
  • With two out and nobody on, Nick Brown hit a single up the middle to get on, then Brandon Austin was hit by a pitch to push Brown to scoring position.  Jacob Terao hit a bouncing ball past the third baseman for the single, bringing in a sliding Brown for the walk-off win.
Inside the Numbers:
  • This is the second straight year where Towson has won its first weekend home game, knocking off Fordham 8-0 on March 15, 2019.
  • Combined in his last two games, Brad Powers hit for the cycle, including the triple today and his single, double and home run on Wednesday.
  • Cam Clark has not allowed an earned run in 7.2 innings of relief this season.
  • The start time for this game was pushed back to 2:30 p.m., from its original start time of 2 p.m., due to earlier rain.
