TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team earned a Sunday doubleheader in wild fashion, coming back from down five to win game one 8-7 and using a nine-run seventh inning to storm past Lafayette 13-4 in game two.
The sweep gives Towson (6-8) a series victory over Lafayette (4-10) as the Tigers won three of four against the Leopards, two in comeback fashion.
In game one, Towson was down 6-1 after six innings, rallying with four in the seventh and three in the eighth to take a two-run lead. The Tigers halted the potential game-tying run on third in the ninth to win 8-7.
The second contest saw Towson take an early 4-0 lead, including a trio in the third. After Lafayette scored two in the seventh, Towson combined five hits, three Leopard errors and two walks to plate nine Tigers en route to the 13-4 victory.
With the victories today, Towson has won four of its last five games, all at home.
Key Stats:
- Four Towson batters hit safely in both games as the Tigers combined for 19 hits in the two contests.
- Burke Camper had multi-hit contests in each game, combining to go 4-for-8 with four RBI, a double and a run scored. Javon Fields also drove in four runs, reaching base six times of a 3-for-6 afternoon with two walks and a hit-by-pitch, having a double and three runs. In the leadoff spot, Matt Arceo was 4-for-8, scoring four times and driving in a pair, adding a double in game two. Colin Conroy scored four runs and finished with three RBI, going 2-for-8. Jacob Terao was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs in game one while Trent Gast-Woodard was 1-for-4 in game two with two RBI and a run.
- On the mound, following starter Tyler Russo with 3.2 innings with six runs, only three earned, and five strikeouts, Kody Reeser (2-1) finished game one with 5.1 frames, having one run and five strikeouts. Game two saw the first-ever start for Austin Weber (2-0) as he went six+ innings, allowing two runs in the seventh and striking out eight in the game.
- For Lafayette, Colin Hartey combined to hit 4-for-9 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Game one starter Brett Kreyer pitched six full with one unearned run and three strikeouts with the loss going to reliever Ryan O'Hara (0-1) with two runs in a third of an inning. The starter in game two, Jake Bloss (0-2), got the loss with 3.2 innings thrown, allowing four runs, three of them earned, with three strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Lafayette got off to an early lead in the opening inning, using a sacrifice fly, a three-base error and an RBI single to go up 3-0.
- Towson got a run back in the bottom half of the frame, starting with Javon Fields reaching second on an error, then stealing third on a Brad Powers walk. Burke Camper grounded a ball through the left side of the infield to score Fields, making it 3-1 Lafayette.
- Lafayette added a pair more off a two-run single from Colin Hartey, then another in the fourth off an error on a fielder's choice, to pop up 6-1.
- Towson got the bats rolling in the bottom of the seventh against the Lafayette bullpen. With one out, Towson loaded the bases on two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Colin Conroy reached on a fielder's choice for a run, then stole second. Fields sent a grounder through the right side, bringing in two runs. Following a Powers walk then a wild pitch, a Camper infield single to second brought another score, completing a four-run inning and making the score 6-5 Lafayette.
- As Kody Reeser continued to hold off Lafayette on the mound, Towson rallied again in the bottom of the eighth to take its first lead. Leadoff walks were followed by a sacrifice bunt for second and third. After Matt Arceo singled to load the bases, Conroy hit a fierce line drive to right for a two-run single, giving Towson the lead. Two batters later, Powers added another run on a ground out for insurance. The Tigers led 8-6 after eight.
- Lafayette had a late comeback attempt, bringing home a run on a Justin Johnson RBI single. Johnson would get to third, but Reeser struck out Ethan Stern to finish the game with an 8-7 Towson victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- The second game began with each starting pitcher going through the opening two innings without a run.
- Inning three, Towson stayed patient and was rewarded. Towson loaded the bases with an error, a walk and hit-by-pitch. Javon Fields walked for a run, Brad Powers was hit by a pitch for another run then a third came in on a sacrifice fly by Burke Camper. The Tigers led 3-0 after three.
- Man on second and two out in the fourth, Matt Arceo hit a ball past the diving shortstop for an RBI single, giving Towson a 4-0 advantage.
- Austin Weber had a stellar six scoreless innings in his start for Towson, striking out eight and allowing just two baserunners in that time. In the seventh, Lafayette got two runs on a Patrick Vandenbergh pinch hit single to pull within two at 4-2.
- Towson countered with a wild seventh inning, beginning with a single and walk. On a Fields sacrifice bunt attempt, a wild throw to third allowed a run to score, then a Powers grounder was thrown away to let Colin Conroy score. Following a Noah Cabrera sac bunt and Brandon Austin walk, Trent Gast-Woodard roped a single to left, bringing home two Tigers. Two batters later, Arceo continued his hot streak by crushing a double to left for another score. Another error on Lafayette allowed Conroy to reach and get to third, plus two more Tigers scored. Fields completed the rally with a single to right to score Conroy. The Tigers had nine runs in the seventh and led 13-2.
- Lafayette got four hits in the ninth and plate two Leopards, but Towson held and took the victory 13-4.
Inside the Numbers:
- This is Towson's first doubleheader sweep since taking both games against Delaware on April 20th, winning 2-1 in extra innings and 10-8 in game two.
- Towson earns its second non-conference series victory in the last three weekends, taking two of three from High Point in February.
- Matt Arceo has put together a five-game hitting streak, including four multi-hit contests in that span.
- Brandon Austin has reached base in his last 11 games while Javon Fields has reached in his last eight.
- The nine-run seventh inning in game two was the second-highest scoring inning for Towson this season, plating 11 players in the fourth inning against UMBC on March 4th.
