TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University football team has announced a home-and-home series with Norfolk State for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
Towson will host the Spartans on Oct. 7, 2023 at Johnny Unitas® Stadium, with the return game scheduled for Aug. 31, 2024 at William "Dick" Price Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia.
"It is great to be able to play a strong, quality opponent in Norfolk State," said Towson head coach Rob Ambrose. "They are one of the top competitors in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and are going to be a challenge in our non-conference schedule these two seasons."
"We very much look forward to facing a quality non-conference opponent like Towson," said Norfolk State head coach Latrell Scott. "I've known Coach Ambrose for a long time and have great respect for his program. We know that those will be two competitive games that our fans will be excited about."
The two programs will meet for the first time since Nov. 24, 1984. In the lone meeting between the teams, the Tigers won 31-21 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII playoffs in Norfolk. Towson rushed for 295 yards in that game, including 128 from Dan Ricker. Towson finished No. 8 nationally in DII that season.
In 2019, Norfolk State finished fourth in the MEAC, finishing 5-7 overall and 4-4 in its conference. The Spartans made an FCS playoff appearance in 2011.
Towson has played several MEAC opponents, including the Battle for Greater Baltimore matchup vs. rival Morgan State. Towson's last MEAC opponent was in 2019, a 42-3 home victory over North Carolina Central.
With this announcement, Towson currently has two non-conference games scheduled for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
