Men’s Swimming & Diving Falls at Navy in Tri-Opener

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Back in the pool for the first official contest since winning the 2021 CAA Championship, the Towson men's swimming and diving team shook off the rust, but fell in a tri-meet hosted at the United States Naval Academy.

Towson fell 191-107 to the host Mids, who received votes in the preseason CSCAA Coaches' Poll. The Tigers were nipped 144-143 against Johns Hopkins at Lejeune Hall. The Blue Jays were ranked seventh in the most recent CSCAA Division III Coaches Poll.

How it Happened
  • Towson kicked off the day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, composed of Evan Bota, Brian Benzing, Nicke McClure and Ryan Baldino. The group finished in 1 minute, 30.65 seconds.
  • Baldino bounced back for a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, which was decided by half a second between first and Baldino's third-place time of 1:40.81.
  • Bota picked up the Tigers' first win of the day in the 100-yard backstroke, winning by over a second with a time of 51.07.
  • Remaining unbeaten in his college career in the 100-yard breaststroke, Benzing took the top spot with a 54.69, using a hot start to hold off Navy's Jonah Harm in 54.92.
  • Michael Fazio finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 20.87, just three-tenths from first place.
  • The Tigers went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle, paced by Baldino at 45.62 while Fazio took second in 46.25. Reed Sells took another second-place finish for Towosn in the 200-yard backstroke with a finishing time of 1:53.87.
  • Benzing took a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:04.01. 
  • Capping the meet, Towson took first and third in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Benzing, Fazio, Trey Adkins and Baldino touched in 1:21.97 with Luke Schwar, Andrew Lapin, TJ Bearor and Coby Ockert in third wirth a 1:25.47.
