This is Towson's third trip to the state of Virginia in the last five weeks, including previous trips to Williamsburg and Richmond for other CAA games.

Towson fell on Senior Day at home to Elon 37-14 last Saturday to enter this game at 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the CAA.  James Madison has won its past five games, the last a 32-22 road victory at William & Mary on Saturday, to stand at 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the league.  JMU is nationally ranked #2 in each the STATS FCS Top-25 and the AFCA Coaches Poll.

This will be the 30th all-time meeting between Towson and James Madison.  JMU has won the last four meetings, including a 27-10 victory on Oct. 26, 2019 in Harrisonburg, and a 22-6-1 all-time lead in the series.  Towson's last win in the series came on Nov. 23, 2013, a 28-17 victory at home.

TOWSON RETURNS TO THE FIELD
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Towson did not play football during the 2020-21 academic year.  The CAA suspended the fall season, then Towson opted out of the spring season.

When Towson took the field on Sept. 4, 2021 against Morgan State, it was 651 days (93 weeks) since its previous game vs. Elon on Nov. 23, 2019.

Towson was one of 35 FCS teams across the country that opted out of the 2021 spring season.  Eight more FCS programs would opt out of the spring by season's end.  All players retained their year of eligibility with the NCAA.

When Towson announced its opt out from the spring on Oct. 19, 2020, head coach Rob Ambrose said the following: "In today's world, there are no easy decisions anymore, everything is a long, planned out decision.  The first thing we did is we took a step back once we knew there was going to be a plan for this, and we asked the players, and we listened.  It is amazing how aware, broad-minded, forward-thinking and how intelligent our student-athletes really are.  We surveyed the guys, more than 75% of the team did not want to trade a full season next year for a six-game season this spring.  After listening to the players, I could not come up with a good reason on why we should do this."

Towson Director of Athletics Tim Leonard added: "With football being a high-contact sport, the student-athletes and coaches agree that potentially sacrificing a normal fall season for a shortened spring year is not the safest course of action.  We support our student-athletes and coaches in this decision, and we look forward to a return to the field for the 2021 season."

DIXON SELECTED AS CAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Leading the defense in the victory over #12/14 Rhode Island, Christian Dixon was selected as the CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18.  The redshirt senior linebacker tallied up 11 tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble in the game.  His forced fumble in the first quarter led to Towson's second touchdown drive.

THREE TIGERS RECOGNIZED IN 2021 CAA PRESEASON AWARDS
Three Tigers were recognized with preseason honors from the CAA: D'Ago Hunter is the 2021 CAA Preseason All-Conference Team kick returner while linebacker Christian Dixon and punter Shane McDonough were each honorable mention.

Hunter became Towson's primary special teams returner in 2019, earning 26.7 yards a kick return on average, just under two yards behind the CAA leader in that category that season.

In his first year as Towson's punter in 2019, McDonough finished second in the CAA in punt average with 43.6 yards per punt, having nine punts of over 50 yards and 14 punts placed inside the 20.

Dixon moved into a starting role at linebacker in 2019, finishing in the top-25 in tackles in the league.  He tallied up 77 tackles, two forced fumbles and nine tackles for loss on the year plus tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks.

GRZYMKOWSKI NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR CAMPBELL TROPHY®
Aaron Grzymkowski was honored as a semifinalist for the 2021 William V. Campbell Trophy®, one of the most prestigious awards in college football.

BATTLE FOR GREATER BALTIMORE SERIES EXTENDED THROUGH 2027
In July, Towson and Morgan State announced an extension of the Battle for Greater Baltimore series through the 2027 season.  With Morgan State being the home team in 2021, the two teams will alternate hosting rights each year.

The teams are separated by five miles, the closest pair of teams in all of FCS play.  2021 will be the 26th meeting between Towson and Morgan State.

TOWSON PICKED SEVENTH IN CAA PRESEASON POLL
Towson was predicted to finish seventh in the CAA preseason poll, voted on by the league's head coaches and media relations directors.

The 2020 NFL season saw two Tigers in the NFL postseason: Smith and Jordan Dangerfield.  Dangerfield served as the special teams captain of the Pittsburgh Steelers in his fourth year with the team.

Several Tigers looked to make their debut in the Canadian Football League this year, with a pair earning spots on the Edmonton Elks.  In April 2020, Malik Tyne was the first-ever draft pick from Towson into the Canadian Football League, taken 24th overall by Edmonton.
