Women’s Swimming and Diving Nipped at UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. -- Just three points separated the Towson University women's swimming and diving team from the UMBC side, but the Tigers ultimately fell 151-148 at UMBC Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

Towson (2-3) picked up sweeps on both the 1- and 3-meter boards, including a Zone Qualifying score from Christina Coleman. Freshman Bridget Thomas collected the first wins of her rookie season in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.

How it Happened
  • Towson led off the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking a 1 minute, 47.95 seconds, just a second and a half back from UMBC's time of 1:46.36.
  • Meagan Clark continued her strong run in the distance events, taking the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:25.62, winning by nearly half a minute. She was the lone Tiger swimming the event among three qualifying Retrievers.
  • Thomas collected her first collegiate victory in the 200-yard freestyle, winning by just over one-tenth of a second with a 1:57.13 over UMBC's Roaa Farag (1:57.28). Katie Nunez took important third-place points with a 1:57.79. Parker Schulz added more points in the 100-yard backstroke, taking second with a 59.02, improving her season best by over half a second.
  • Likewise, Tiffany Matulis finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:07.29 while Karlee Carminati and Samantha Casolo took second and third in the 200-yard butterfly at 2:08.06 and 2:08.55, respectively. Maddie Frick picked up a fourth-place finish with a 2:10.27.
  • In the first sprint of the day, Maddie Mince took second with a 24.76, followed by Ava Enriquez at 25.09. 
  • Towson swept the 1-meter diving event, topped by Christina Coleman's 269.32, qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving for the third time. Teammate Alyssa Largay took second in the event with a 257.62 while Sarah DiGaetano finished third with a 254.32.
  • In the second sprint, Nunez and Hailey Ritter finished second and third, with Nunez touching in 53.84 while Ritter finished in 54.15.
  • Schulz and Frick continued Towson's second-third pattern in the 200-yard backstroke, with Schulz going for a 2:08.76 while Frick finished in 2:09.74.
  • Clark finished second in the 200-yard breast with a 2:27.38, followed by Thomas's second victory of the day, winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.78. Teammate Suzannah Mills finished three seconds later in 5:14.84.
  • Mince and Enriquez took another second-and-third place finish at 58.12 and 58.13 in the 100-yard fly.
  • It was another one-two-three for the Towson diving squad as Largay won the 3-meter event with a 259.57. Coleman finished second at 245.32 while freshman Abby O'Leary notched a 227.02.
  • Clark and Carminati paired for second and third place finishes in the 200-yard IM, the former going in 2:10.52 while the latter finished half a second later with a 2:11.10.
  • In the final event of the day, the Tigers picked up a key win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with Enriquez, Nunez, Mince and Schulz winning in 3:32.61. Towson's second squad of Victoria Dichak, Ritter, Thomas and Mills took third in 3:37.83.
Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers are idle next week before heading to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania for the annual Bucknell Invitational.
  • Action kicks off at the Kinney Natatorium on Friday, Nov. 19 and runs until Sunday, Nov. 21.
  • Each day will feature qualifying heats at 10 a.m. and finals heats at 6 p.m.
