Milani Scores Overtime Winner Over Saint Joseph’s

TOWSON, Md. -- They say lacrosse is a game of runs and Saturday's matchup between Towson University and Saint Joseph's lived up to that billing. The Tigers walked away with an 8-7 overtime win over the Hawks thanks to Andrew Milani.

With nearly half of the overtime period gone, Saint Joseph's threw the ball away unpressured, setting up a Koby Smith ground ball that got Towson back on offense. Once settled, Andrew Milani took a short stick defender to the wing, got by him and scored his first career game-winning goal.

Brody McLean logged his second hat trick of the season for Towson (1-1) with three goals while Andrew Milani finished with a pair. Casey Wasserman, Andrew Beacham and Greg Ey all scored their first goals of the year as well. Beacham, Wasserman, McLean and Chop Gallagher all added assists.

Saint Joseph's (0-1) was led by two goals from Austin Strazzulla with five other Hawks scoring once. Matt Bohmer and Adam Ritter posted one assist apiece.

How it Happened
  • Towson scored the first two goals of the game just 45 seconds apart as Beacham and Wasserman each found the back of the net. Towson's defense held the Hawks off the board for the entirety of the first period. Shane Brennan made five saves in the first 15 minutes for the Tigers.
  • Saint Joseph's rallied back and tied the affair at 2-2 on back-to-back goals one minute apart midway through the second quarter. Strazzulla and Ritter each scored.
  • The Tigers reeled off a four-goal run from the middle of the second period into the early third as McLean scored three times surrounding Ey's goal. Gallagher logged his first career point with an assist on McLean's first marker.
  • But the Hawks strung together a run of their own, putting together a three-goal burst in a 51 second span. Ryan Doran, Shane Fable and Matt Popeck all scored in the run.
  • Milani broke up the streak and ended a 10-minute Tiger drought with his third of the season at 3:40 of the third.
  • Saint Joseph's was the lone side to score in the fourth quarter as Mac McLaughlin and Strazulla scored at 9:34 and 1:32, respectively.
  • The Hawks got off two shots nearing the end of regulation, but neither attempt went on cage and setup Towson's first overtime game since May 2019.
  • In the extra stanza, Ritter won the faceoff for Saint Joseph's, but an unforced turnover put the ball back with Towson.
  • Acting head coach Steve Grossi called timeout while offensive coordinator Matt Musci drew up the final plays of the game, setting up Milani's game-winner.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson controlled time of possession, take 42 shots against the Hawks' 34. The Tigers reeled off 15 attempts in the first quarter with another 10 in the third.
  • The Hawks won the faceoff battle 13-18, but Towson came out on top of ground balls, 40-33. Saint Joseph's struggled to clear the ball, gaining the zone on six of 15 qualifying chances. Towson went 13-of-16 in clearing.
  • The Tigers netted the game's lone man-up chance, Ey's second-quarter tally, while getting four chances. Towson was called for two penalties and held Saint Joseph's man-up unit without a goal.
