Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 1 Duke at Home

TOWSON, Md. -- A big first half from the visitors put the Towson University men's lacrosse team in an early hole as the Tigers fell 19-7 against top-ranked Duke University Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

The No. 1 Blue Devils (4-0) carried an 11-2 lead into the halftime break, holding Towson scoreless for the entire second and third quarters. Towson (1-2) rebounded late with five goals in the fourth quarter.

Towson was paced by two goals apiece from Andrew Milani and James Avzanto. Five different Tigers provided assists, including one from Avanzato to finish with three points.

Duke was led by four goals from Brennan O'Neill while Owen Caputo, Joe Robertson and Nakie Montogomery had three goals apiece. Michael Sowers led the game with four assists along with two goals for six points.

How it Happened
  • Duke scored the first three goals of the game in a quick two minute burst. Towson's defense settled in before Milani notched the Tigers' first of the day on a feed from Ryan Swain at 5:26 of the first.
  • The Blue Devils scored back-to-back goals from Joey Manown and Montogomery 31 seconds apart before Avanzato logged his first. O'Neill scored with one second left in the frame for a 6-2 Duke lead.
  • Duke continued its run of goals with five in the second quarter and another three in the third. The Blue Devils got one more from Sowers to start the fourth quarter.
  • Milani halted the dry spell for Towson with his second at 12:32 of the fourth with Austin Ducommun logging his first career point on the assist.
  • Two minutes later, Pat Anderson added his first career goal on a roll dodge. Cameron Mule scored back-to-back for Duke. Towson finished strong with a three-goal burst from rookie Jamison Gaskins on a feed from Jonathan Bender. That marker was followed by man-up goals from Brody McLean and Avanzato two minutes apart.
  • Duke scored the final goal with 34 seconds left for a 19-7 decision.

Behind the Numbers
  • Duke out-shot the Tigers 50-28, controlling the time of possession. Duke took 14 shots in the odd periods and 11 in the even stanzas. The Blue Devils won the faceoff battle 23-29, with Jake Naso going 21-of-25 with 11 ground balls.
  • Shane Brennan made 13 saves in net for the Tigers. He was spelled for the final six minutes by Jake Stout. Duke's starting netminder, Mike Adler, played 45 minutes and made eight saves. Turner Upgren played nearly 14 minutes while Andrew Bonafede played for just under 90 seconds.
  • McLean extended his point scoring streak to 17 games in a row with 37 goals in the stretch.
  • Milani has logged two goals in every game this season while bringing his point streak to four games in a row.
  • Duke has won the last five meeting between the programs, but the Tigers still lead the all-time series 7-5.
