Towson’s Defense, Efficient Offense Lead to Road Win

EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Big defensive stops and highly-efficient offense led the Towson University men's lacrosse team to an 11-5 win Wednesday evening at Mount St. Mary's.

Towson (2-2) got a career-best tying 18 saves from redshirt junior netminder Shane Brennan, which aided in just one goal allowed in the final 34 minutes of the game. Junior James Avanzato had a breakout game with five points on two goals and three assists while Brody McLean posted his third hat trick of the year.

Mount St. Mary's (1-2) was led by two goals from Jake Krieger. The Mountaineers did not post an assist in the contest at Waldron Family Stadium.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a fast 2-0 lead behind back-to-back goals from Avanzato at 9:44 and 8:23. The Mount cut the lead in half after the ensuing faceoff as Weisel found the back of the net.
  • The Tigers racked another back-to-back pair of goals from McLean and Wasserman, with Avanzato assisting the former. Wasserman dodged from middle and past his man with 1:46 to go in the quarter for a 4-1 Towson lead 15 minutes in.
  • Mount St. Mary's scored early in the second quarter on a Frankeny goal 25 seconds in, cutting the lead in half again. CAA Rookie of the Week Andrew Milani notched the Tigers' fifth goal with 12:14 in the second, scoring a fade-away jumper on a dish from Jamison Gaskins.
  • Krieger scored back-to-back for the Mount, pulling the hosts within one before McLean scored his second of the day with 71 seconds left in the half, giving Towson the 6-4 advantage at the pause.
  • Towson controlled the second half of the game, including a 4-1 difference in the third quarter. Ryan Swain got the scoring started two minutes into the fresh half. The Mount scored one minute later on a Connor McMahon goal, which proved to be the final marker for the Mountaineers.
  • The Tigers reeled off three straight to end the third quarter, including goals from Swain, Milani and McLean. With a flag down and one second on the shot clock, Austin Stewart scored the final goal of the night with 8:35 to play for an 11-5 decision.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson's offense was extremely efficient, scoring 11 goals on 23 shots. Brennan made 18 saves against 33 total Mountaineer shots, 23 of which were on cage.
  • Faceoffs were tight in the second half as Towson won five of the eight in the last two quarters to seal the win. Drew Martin went five-for-eight in his first career outing as a faceoff man.
  • McLean posted his third hat trick of the season and 10th of his Towson career. Avanzato finished with a career-best five points, scoring twice on five shots.
  • More than half of Towson's 11 goals were assisted as six had feeders on the back end. Gaskins, Swain and Wasserman all added helpers to their nights.
  • Reagan McNemar forced two of Towson's eight turnovers.
  • In the Shawn Nadelen era (2012) Towson is 46-0 when scoring in double digits and limiting opponents to single figures. The Tigers are 54-8 in that same span when hitting double figures. Towson is 34-28 on the road under Nadelen.
  • The Tigers are 2-0 this season in the state of Maryland, topping Saint Joseph's in overtime at home two weeks ago.
  • Towson picked up its first true road win since April 27, 2019, an 11-9 decision at Drexel. The Tigers improved to 9-0 all-time against Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg. Towson is currently 2-0 against the Northeast Conference this season.
