Kubek Posts Double-Double and Nelson Drops 23 in Win Over Drexel

TOWSON, Md. – Freshman Allie Kubek recorded her third double-double of the season to lead the Towson women's basketball team to a 77-62 win over Drexel on Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena.  

The Senior Day victory is the first win against Drexel since Towson's CAA Championship on March 16, 2019. 

The Tigers split the weekend series with the Dragons, falling 71-55 on Saturday, to stay in second in the CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) standings. 

Kubek recorded career-highs in two categories with 20 points and 14 rebounds.   

Aleah Nelson led Towson on the offensive attack with a career-best 23 points, five rebounds and seven assists. LaKaitlin Wright and Shavonne Smith also registered in double-figures with 10 points each. In addition, Wright contributed seven boards.  

Drexel saw three players reach double-digits including Keishana Washington with a team-high 17 points and three helpers.  
 
Records:   

  • Towson – 12-5 (7-3 CAA)  
  • Drexel – 10-7 (7-5 CAA)  

Beyond the Box:   

  • Smith has 10 or more points in 14 of her last 16 contests and is averaging 13.4 points per game, third highest on the team.  
  • Towson dominated the boards, grabbing 44 total rebounds to the Dragon's 17. 
  • Nelson has topped the Tigers in assists 16 of 17 contests this season. The sophomore from Baltimore is averaging 6.8 assists per contest. 
  • The Tigers had their best game of the season at the line, shooting 91.30 percent (21-for-23). The team's previous high was 81.25 percent (13-for-16) during the first game against Drexel. 
  • Towson controlled Sunday's contest, owning the lead for 35:24 of the game. 
  • With Kubek's impressive performance, the Tigers have now accumulated 11 total double-doubles throughout the season so far. 
  • Towson cashed in on 24 second chance points while Drexel only netted two. The Tigers have accumulated 252 points off second chances this season.  

Postgame Quote:  

  • Head Coach Diane Richardson: "Today was a hard-fought game. I think it boiled down to having much better defense today that we did yesterday. We were locked in, we had more energy going and as a result we got the win today." 
  • Freshman forward Allie Kubek: "My teammates and my coaches are pushing me to become a better player. To take shots when I'm open and encouraging each other. I give it all to them, they gave me the  confidence to shoot and pass the ball."

How it Happened:   

  • Drexel got off to a quick start, going up 4-0 to start the contest. Towson answered with six straight points, including two free throws and a layup from Smith.  
  • With 2:12 to go, Kubek made her second 3-pointer of the quarter to put the Tigers up 14-8.  
  • To open the second quarter Skye Williams and Maggie Sharp cashed in on back-to-back 3-point field goals to extend the lead by 12. The Tigers shot 40 percent (4-for-10) from 3-point range during the quarter.  
  • Nelson followed with a three-point play in the paint to cap an eight-point run for the Tigers.  
  • Towson went into the locker room up 44-27 with 20 boards to Drexel's nine.  
  • The Dragons went on a six-point run to start the second half and cut the lead to 10. The Tigers answered with baskets from Wright, Nelson and Kubek to make the score 55-41.  
  • Nelson and Kubek ended the quarter with six points each as well as five boards for Kubek.  
  • The final quarter was the lowest scoring of the day, with both teams totaling 27 points.  
  • Towson saw its biggest lead of the game of 18 points at 3:04 with the score, 70-52. The Tigers held the Dragons to just 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the field during the fourth.  
  • Nelson ended the game with a three-point play off a fast break layup to finalize the 77-62 win.  

Next Game:   

  • Towson will travel to take on Delaware for a pair of games on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. Both games will tipoff at 1 p.m. and will be available to stream on FloHoops.com.
