Women's Basketball Falls to UNCW In Final Regular Season Contest

WILMINGTON, N.C – The Towson women's basketball team dropped a tough 75-65 decision to UNCW on the road Friday night to split the last series of the regular season.  

Kionna Jeter led the Tigers with 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals. She is now third on the all-time scoring list with 1,563 points. The senior 24.5 points, 3.5 steals and seven boards over the weekend series.  

Skye Williams ran the offense at the point again, scoring 13 points. She also added six rebounds and a team-high three assists.  

Allie Kubek grabbed a team-high nine boards while adding 10 points, two steals and a blocked shot.  

Carol-Anne Obusek led the Seahawks for the second game in a row with 23 points, shooting 9-of-10 from the field. She added 12 rebounds as well.  

Without the win, the Tigers will be the fourth seed for the upcoming CAA Tournament. Towson will play the No. 5 seed, Hofstra, in the Quarterfinals on March 11 at 11 a.m. 

As a result of the loss, the Tigers slip into a third place tie with Drexel, as both teams have an 8-6 conference record. The Dragons win the tiebreaker between the two programs because both teams split series against James Madison and dropped games two contests each against Delaware. Drexel, however, swept Northeastern while Towson split against the Huskies. The Dukes will be seeded second, finishing a half-game ahead of both the Tigers and the Dragons. The CAA Tournament is set to begin on March 10 at Elon.

Beyond the Box:   

  • As a Tiger, Jeter has scored in double figures 74 times in 82 career games. 
  • Jeter moves to third overall on the Towson University women's basketball all-time scoring list. The Spartanburg, S.C. native has 1,563 career points. Next on the list is Tanisha McTiller with 1,605 points. 
  • The Tigers forced 18 turnovers for 20 total points. Towson also had another big effort in the paint, netting 36 points.  

How it Happened:   

  • Towson went on a nine-point run to start off the game and take the 9-2 edge. 
  • UNCW answered to knot the score at 11 to end the quarter. Jeter and Obusek each registered six points in the first 10:00. 
  • The Seahawks started the second quarter hitting six of six field goals attempted to take the 27-19 lead at the 5:33 mark.  
  • UNCW went on an 11-2 run, with a jumper added from Williams, to take the 40-26 edge into the locker room.  
  • Towson came out and scored 21 points in the third quarter. 
  • A driving layup from Williams at the 1:12 mark put the score within seven points. Williams went on to score seven points and added three boards in the third quarter.  
  • UNCW started the final quarter putting in 10 points in the first three minutes of play. Jeter answered, contributing five points along with a layup from Shavonne Smith to cut the deficit to 18.  
  • Towson held UNCW scoreless for the final 4:07 of the contest, forcing six turnovers. The Tigers went on a 13-0 run during the span. However, it was not enough as the Seahawks took the 10-point win.  

Next Game:   

  • Towson will face Hofstra, in the Quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament on March 11 at 11 a.m. at Elon at the Schar Center.
