Men’s Lacrosse Falls in CAA Opener at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA -- Despite a career-best day from faceoff specialist Shane Santora, the Towson University men's lacrosse team dropped a nailbiter at Drexel University, falling 12-10 Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field.

Towson (2-4, 0-1 CAA) was led in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener by a hat trick from redshirt freshman Andrew Milani. Santora went 20 of 26 in faceoffs, picking up six ground balls along the way.

Drexel (1-0, 1-0 CAA) was paced by a seven-point performance from Sean Donnelly, who finished with four goals and three assists. Ryan Genord added five points on three goals and two assists in the Dragons' season opener.

How it Happened
  • Drexel struck first from Sean Donnelly with more than half the first quarter elapsed, but the Tigers reeled off three in a row from Milani twice and Carson Gaeger. Towson held Drexel off the board for the remainder of the frame for a 3-1 advantage after 15 minutes.
  • Genord broke the drought for Drexel but Towson redoubled its lead as Avanzato netted his ninth of the season on a dish from Casey Wasserman.
  • The Dragons scored back-to-back to tie the game at 4-4 from Sean Curcio and Genord. Curcio scored on an extra-man chance, the first man-down goal Towson has allowed since the first quarter of the season opener.
  • Brody McLean and Ryan Swain another pair of back-to-back goals for a 6-4 advantage late in the half, but the Dragons trimmed that lead back to one with 39.9 seconds to play in the second half for a 6-5 Tiger advantage at the break.
  • Both sides traded body blows in the third quarter as Towson scored three times in the frame while Drexel scored twice. The Dragons led out of the break five minutes in on a goal from Donnelly before McLean spun inside his man and scored five hole at 6:50 of the third. Greg Ey scored on the run for the Tigers to make it a two-goal game, 8-6.
  • Donnelly scored again for Drexel to make it 8-7, but that one-goal difference was short lived as Milani scored his third of the day for back-to-back hat tricks and a 9-7 lead at the end of three quarters.
  • Towson struggled in the fourth quarter, falling behind midway through after Drexel scored five of the game's last six goals. Towson took two penalties in the fourth, one of which led to a Drexel goal. Down 10-9, Towson got an equalizer from Austin Stewart to make it 10-10, but Reid Bowering and Colin Mailman scored five minutes apart to put the game out of reach for Towson.

Behind the Numbers
  • Redshirt freshman Shane Santora had a career day at the faceoff spot, winning 20 of the game's 26 draws. He is the first Tiger to win at least 15 draws on the road since Alex Woodall went 22 of 25 at Fairfield on April 6, 2019.
  • Milani scored his second-straight hat trick with his team-best three goals. Stewart finished with two points on a goal and an assist while McLean notched a pair of goals as well.
  • The Tigers won the ground ball battle 27-21, including 16 in the second half looking to stage a comeback. Towson won 10 of the 13 faceoffs in the second half as well.
  • Shane Brennan made a dozen saves for the Tigers. Counterpart Ross Blumnethal also made 12 saves.
  • Donnelly had a seven-point game for Drexel, scoring four times with three assists. Genord finished with three goals and two assists for five points.
  • The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for Towson over Drexel, dating back to April 25, 2015 at Vidas Field.

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers take on Hofstra for their next game, the first CAA game at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium since April 13, 2019.
  • Game time has not been finalized for the clash with the Pride and will be announced in the coming week.
