Second Half Surge Sees Men’s Lacrosse Past Fairfield

TOWSON, Md. -- Putting together a nine-goal second half, the Towson University men's lacrosse team surged past visiting Fairfield University 12-11 Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

The Tigers (4-6, 1-3 CAA) picked up their first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win of the season, and first since April 27, 2019 after not playing a league game in 2020. Towson got a pair of goals and an assist from redshirt freshman Andrew Milani, who scored the eventual game-winner on a nifty behind-the-back shot on the crease. Shane Brennan made 10 saves for the Tigers.

Fairfield (2-6, 0-5 CAA) had a five-point day from Dylan Beckwith, including four goals and an assist. Jake Coleman (1g, 2a) and Matt Chlastawa (2g, 1a) added three points as well. Dylan Smith won 17 of the 26 faceoffs in the game, grabbing 10 ground balls.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game as Reece Potter posted the first goal of his Towson career in a broken clear attempt for Fairfield.
  • The Stags responded with seven of game's next eight goals, started by a three-goal burst from Chlastawa, Travis Ford and Beckwith. Ryan Swain hit a man-up goal to halt that run, but Fairfield scored the next four goals from Taylor Strough, Beckwith twice and Ryan Lancaster. Ford assisted both of Beckwith's goals in the run.
  • Tim Montgomery scored with 3:29 to play in the half, sending the Tigers into break in a  7-3 deficit.
  • Out of halftime, Fairfield extended its lead back to five, 8-3, on a Coleman goal. Brody McLean scored his 19th of the season. Stag Barnard Coleman put the lead back to five a 9-4 before a pair of goals from Swain and Alex Reid. The latter assisted the former while Reid was helped by James Avanzato.
  • Beckwith struck for his fourth with 4:31 to play in the third to make it 10-6 in favor of the visitors.
  • Towson bridged the third and fourth quarters with a six-goal outburst, including markers from Jake McLean and Reid in the final minute of the frame to make it 10-8.
  • Fifth-year transfer long stick midfielder Ethan Ticehurst posted his first Tiger goal 11 seconds into the fourth quarter on a feed from faceoff man Drew Martin, cutting the Stags' lead down to one.
  • Milani tied the game at 10-10 with 13:41 to play, getting a pass from Carson Gaeger, who was honored in the pregame with the CB30 Award for the late Carl Beernink. Brody McLean gave Towson its first lead since the 9:36 mark of the first quarter as he buried his 20th of the year on an Avanzato feed.
  • With 5:50 to play, Milani cut down to the crease, got a feed from Avanzato and went behind-the-back to increase his shooting angle, potting what stood to be the game-winning goal, his second winner of the season.
  • Forty-two seconds later, Chlastawa cut Towson's lead back to one at 12-11, but Towson's defense and Brennan stood tall to seal Towson's first league win of the year. Tewaaraton candidate Koby Smith forced a Beckwith turnover with 76 seconds to go and cleared the ball, helping Towson snap a three-game CAA skid this season.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson ripped off 49 total shots, putting 22 on cage. It was the fourth time a Shawn Nadelen-coached Towson team has taken 49 shots in a game. The Stags managed 41 attempts, with 21 on net. Each netminder made 10 saves in the contest. Fairfield's Colin Consoli made six stops in the second half alone.
  • Fairfield won 17 of the game's 26, which aided the Stags in a 37-30 edge in ground balls. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, including 10 caused turnovers for Towson. The Tigers' starting defense, Koby Smith, Colby Barsz and Garrett Zungailia, combined for five caused turnovers.
  • The Tigers ran their winning streak over the Stags to three, improving to 6-1 all-time against Fairfield since the series began in 2015.
  • Towson improved to 3-1 at home this season, winning back-to-back games at Minnegan Field after a 7-6 win over No. 12 Loyola (March 27).
  • Towson has played six one-goal games this spring, improving to 3-3 in those contests.
