Men’s Swimming Dominates Day Two of Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. -- The Towson University men's swimming and diving team was all gas, no brakes Friday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The Tigers medaled in every single event for a second straight day to take a commanding lead in the team standings.

Towson holds the top spot in the team competition with 601.50 points, with UNCW over 100 points back with 479. Delaware is in third with 340, followed by Drexel (337) and William & Mary (328.50).

Freshman Brian Benzing continued his dominance in the 100 breaststroke, winning both the preliminary round and the finals, setting Towson, CAA All-Time and Championship records in each swim, finishing at 52.57 seconds in the finals.

On Friday, the Tigers won 10 of a possible 17 medals, collecting three gold, four silver and three bronze medals during the day two finals.

How it Happened
  • Towson opened the finals session in a tight 200-yard medley relay, taking second behind the group of Evan Bota, Benzing, Cody Stewart and Ryan Baldino. The group finished in 1:27.19, a half second off the winning pace from UNCW (1:26.65).
  • Patrick Flint and Ryan Bookstein picked up silver and bronze each in the 400-yard IM, going in 3:58.33 and 3:59.28, respectively.
  • The next event, the 100-yard butterfly, saw another second- and third-place finish from Stewart and Nick McClure. The former finished in 47.73 while the latter stopped the clock in 48.15. Noah Diacumakos added points with a sixth-place time of 49.16.
  • Towson dropped a one-two punch in the 200-yard free as Baldino won gold in 1:37.07, followed one second later by Michael Fazio, who touched in 1:38.13. Again Towson added points with a sixth-place finish, this time from Luke Schwar in 1:39.64.
  • After a record-setting push in the preliminary round, Benzing continued to lower his conference meet and all-time record, including the Towson record, in the 100 breaststroke. Finishing with a 52.57, Benzing went his entire rookie campaign without losing the event. Nick Fitzwilliam picked up a ninth-place finish in the B Final with a 56.39.
  • Bota added an individual medal with a bronze finish in the 100-yard backstroke, going off in a 48.73. It was another big points grab for Towson with McClure and Stewart tying for fourth  in 49.81. Reed Sells notched the top finish in the B Finals with a 50.46.
  • Towson capped the second night with a relay win, taking the 800-yard freestyle relay by seven seconds. Benzing led off, followed by Fazio, Schwar and Baldino for a 6:36.12. UNCW finished second with a 6:43.04.
