Men’s Lacrosse Falls Against No. 13 Delaware

TOWSON, Md. -- A flat start sealed the fate of the Towson University men's lacrosse team, which dropped a 16-8 decision Saturday afternoon against visiting University of Delaware, ranked 13th in both major polls.

Towson (6-7, 3-4 CAA) was led in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game by a four-point day from James Avanzato, who notched two goals and two assists at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Brody McLean added two goals for Towson as well.

Delaware (9-2, 6-1 CAA) had a six-point day from Charlie Kitchen, who had two goals alongside four assists. Tye Kurtz added five points on two goals and three assists. Matt Kilkeary played all 60 minutes in net for Delaware, stopping 13 shots.

How it Happened
  • Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game on goals from Cam Acchione and Kurtz. Kitchen assisted on both efforts.
  • The Tigers cut the lead in half as Ryan Swain buried his 14th of the season with 11:09 to play in the quarter. Kitchen and Cam Acchione scored another back-to-back goal set at 10:50 and 1:47 of the first.
  • Towson trailed 4-2 after 15 minutes thanks to a would-be feed from Avanzato that missed its target but found the back of the net with 2.5 seconds to go in the period.
  • The Blue Hens scored the only two goals of the second stanza on Cam Acchione's third of the day 90 seconds into the period, followed a minute later by Nick Jessen on a Kitchen feed. Neither team found the goal for the final 13 minutes of the half, with Delaware lead 6-2 at the break.
  • Brody McLean got the scoring started for the Tigers in the second half, finishing a feeder from Avanzato on the crease.
  • Delaware put together a five-goal run over a 10 minute stretch in the third quarter from Cam Acchione, Matt Acchione, Mike Robinson and Kurtz.
  • Avanzato broke the run apart with 3:09 to play in the third, his 15th of the year, making it 11-4 in favor of Delaware. The Blue Hens scored the final goal of the period 30 seconds later on Kitchen's second of the day. Delaware committed a holding foul at the end of the third quarter, which put the Tigers up a man to start the fourth.
  • The Tigers made quick work of the penalty as Brody McLean dunked on the crease to finish a lop pass from Avanzato just six seconds into the final frame for a 12-5 score.
  • Delaware strung together another three goals from Cam Acchione, Robinson and Mark Bieda. The Tigers halted the run with a transition goal from Brandon Hund, the first of his Tiger career. Robinson scored the final Delaware goal of the afternoon with 5:06 to play in the game.
  • Towson got the last two markers of the day, as Jamison Gaskins and Pat Anderson went back to back at 1:44 and 1:13. Jonathan Bender assisted on the Gaskins goal.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson out-shot the Blue Hens 35-32, putting up 11 shots in the second and another 10 in the third. Delaware scored on 16 of its 23 shots on net, however.
  • Both teams cleared well, with Towson going 16-of-16 on qualifying chances, while Delaware had just one failed attempt on 20 tries.
  • The Blue Hens won the ground ball battle, taking a 38-24 advantage, which was aided by a 16-of-24 day at the faceoff X. Jake Hervada won 10 of his 14 draws with five ground balls.
  • Towson caused seven of Delaware's 10 turnovers, with Koby Smith causing two turnovers.
  • Towson dropped two games in the same season to Delaware for the first time ever - Towson fell 13-12 in overtime in Newark, Delaware back at the end of March.
