Men’s Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Playing its third one-goal game in as many weeks, the Towson University men's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) decision on the road at Hofstra University Saturday afternoon.

Towson (3-6, 0-3 CAA) was led by three points from Brody McLean, who scored twice with an assist. Austin Stewart, Andrew Milani and Ryan Swain all turned in one goal, one assist efforts. Shane Brennan made 10 saves in goal for the Tigers.

Hofstra (5-2, 2-1 CAA) had a hat trick from Justin Sykes, while Colton Rudd scored twice. Ryan Tierny had a four-point game with one goal and three assists. Bobby Casey made a dozen saves for the Pride with Brian Herber going 13-of-18 at the faceoff X.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a quick lead as Stewart swept the top of the box and buried his first shot of the game with 12:07 to play in the first quarter.
  • The Pride got back-to-back goals from Rudd with 6:37 and 1:06 to play in the opening period, taking a 2-1 lead through the first 15 minutes.
  • After a defensive stalemate to open the second quarter, Hofstra broke the dry spell with five minutes gone in the quarter on a goal from Sykes on a feed from Justin Lynskey.
  • The Pride took advantage of an unsettled situation to extend the lead to 4-1 with 7:29 to play in the second quarter as James Philbin finished a feed from Tierney. Hofstra scored another unsettled goal to take a 5-1 lead with 4:43 to play in the half, with Bryce Tolmie finishing on a pass from Tierney.
  • Towson ended a long scoring drought with 2:28 to go in the second quarter as Jake McLean and Andrew Milani worked a two-man game, with McLean popping off a pick and getting an assist from the redshirt freshman, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
  • Towson struck within the first 25 seconds of the second half as longstick midfielder Ethan Ticehurst stayed whistle ready, picked up a loose ball after a Hofstra procedure call and found a waiting Brody McLean on the doorstep at 14:35 of the third quarter.
  • The Tigers pulled back within one on Brody McLean's second point of the day as he threw a skip pass across the box to Tim Montgomery, who buried a 17 yard shot to the far post at 7:38 of the third.
  • Hofstra scored its first goal of the second half with 1:40 to play in the third. As a Towson penalty expired, Tierney fired a shot from the outside that found the back of the net. Hofstra took a 6-4 lead through 15 minutes.
  • Towson once again cut the lead to one at 6-5 as Milani buried his first goal of the day on a 12-yard step down with a feed from Ryan Swain. Towson tied the game for the first time since it was 1-1 as Brody McLean tip-toed the crease and fell away from the goal mouth, getting the tight pass from James Avanzato on a restart with 7:17 to play in the fourth.
  • The tie was short-lived as the Pride scored back-to-back goals at 6:15 and 5:48, both from Sykes.
  • Towson made it a one-goal game at 8-7 with 4:33 to play in the fourth quarter as Stewart found a cutting Swain from five yards out. That would be the final goal of the game for either team. Towson had a man-up chance with 27 seconds to play, but an errant pass gave possession back to Hofstra.
Behind the Numbers
  • In a game as even as the score, both teams took 31 total shots, with Towson putting 19 on cage while the Pride had 18 on net.
  • Towson was 1-for-4 on the extra man, while the Tigers' man-down unit held Hofstra off the board. Each side incurred four penalties in the game.
  • The Tigers cleaned up their clearing game, gaining the zone on 17 of 19 qualifying chances. Hofstra had 18 successful clears on 19 attempts.
  • Hofstra had 26 ground balls while Towson gathered 19, paced by three from Avanzato and Mo Sillah
Up Next for Towson
