OTTAWA, Ontario – Towson University football alum
Frank Beltre is back in the Canadian Football League (CFL), signing with the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday.
Beltre has been a longtime veteran of the CFL, playing for the Toronto Argonauts from 2018-19 and the Calgary Stampeders from 2014-16. Playing defense and special teams, he has played in 57 games in his CFL career, helping Calgary win the Grey Cup in 2014.
With the CFL not playing in 2020, Beltre notched a combined 35 tackles in the 2019 season with Toronto, including 27 on special teams.
He also had previously signed reserve/future contracts in the National Football League (NFL) with the San Diego Chargers in 2013, the Oakland Raiders in 2014 and New York Jets in 2014.
While with Towson, Beltre was a three-time All-CAA defensive end, including First Team in 2011 and 2012. He racked up 231 tackles in his collegiate career, including 37.5 for loss and 10 sacks in 46 career games, helping Towson win Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) titles in 2011 and 2012.
Towson alumni have put their stamp on the CFL in recent years. In April,
Tibo Debaillie was selected 20
th overall in the 2021 CFL Global Draft while
Malik Tyne was taken 24
th overall in the 2020 CFL Draft, each by the Edmonton Football Team. In addition,
Shane Leatherbury and
Tom Flacco signed free agent contracts with the BC Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders for the 2021 campaign respectively.
The Ottawa Redblacks play at the TD Place Stadium in Canada's capital, last winning the Grey Cup in 2016. First game for Ottawa will be on Friday, June 11 vs. Montreal.
