TOWSON, Md. – Four members of the Towson University women's lacrosse team received Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors for the 2021 regular season.
Defender
Sami Chenoweth, midfielder
Blair Pearre and midfielder
Lindsey Marshall were named to the All-CAA First Team. Pearre, Marshall and defensive midfielder
Olivia Malamphy earned All-Rookie honors.
Pearre was selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year. She is the sixth Tiger to earn the award, joining Becky Trumbo (2003), Mandy Corry (2005), Hillary Fratzke (2006),
Gabby Cha (2014) and
Natalie Sulmonte (2016).
The 2020 CAA campaign did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the league did not select all-conference teams. For 2021 spring sports, the CAA ruled that true sophomores who played a shortened season last year were eligible for Rookie of the Week and All-Rookie honors. Pearre and Malamphy are true sophomores.
This is the fourth season that Chenoweth has been recognized by the league's coaches. She made the All-Rookie team as a freshman (2017), earned All-CAA Second Team honors as a sophomore (2018) and was also a First-Team selection as a junior (2019). This season, she led the CAA with 31 caused turnovers, increasing her school and league record to 182. With 27 groundballs, the Manchester Valley product moved into 6th place on Towson's all-time list. She recorded the first two points of her career with assists versus Loyola and George Mason. In the win over then #8/#10 Loyola, Chenoweth held All-American Livy Rosenzweig to two assists.
"Sami has left her mark on this program," Towson head coach
Sonia LaMonica said. "She is hungry to go out strong in her fifth year. She has been ultra-motivated and worked hard during the off-season for this year. That is showing on the field. She has been a strong leader and it is awesome to have someone with so much experience on your backline."
Pearre led the CAA with 26 free-position goals and ranked second nationally, averaging 1.73 free-position goals per game during the regular season. The sophomore scored at least two goals in 13 of 15 regular season games. She scored at least five goals on four occasions, including a career-best seven goals (on seven shots) in a victory over William & Mary. She was named CAA Rookie of the Week on April 13 and May 3. The former McDonogh star, who finished the regular season with nine hat tricks, topped Towson in goals (49), points (53) and groundballs (33) and finished second in draw controls (57).
"It is exciting to see someone as young as her playing with so much confidence," LaMonica said. "Blair is a great finisher, especially on the 8-meters. She does a great job of going hard, drawing fouls and putting herself into position to convert off it. She has also been outstanding on draws. She is competitor on the 50/50 balls and she will not be out-played."
Marshall had an impressive rookie campaign, finishing the regular season ranked third on the team with 43 points (29g, 14a) and winning a team-leading 83 draw controls. The Catonsville graduate had four hat tricks, including a career-high five goals versus Georgetown. She won a season-best 10 draw controls against William & Mary and controlled at least five draws on 11 occasions. Marshall earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on March 2 and March 23.
"Lindsey is a true draw specialist and as coach it is great to have someone with that skillset," LaMonica added. "It is remarkable the impact she has made as a true freshman. On the offensive end, she is dynamic as well. It is going to be exciting to see her continue to grow and be a top player in the nation."
Malamphy, who spent her freshman season at Boston College, ranked in the top five on the team in three categories: groundballs (18), caused turnovers (11) and draw controls (11). The Archbishop Spalding graduate was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on February 16 after the Tigers season opening victory over Mount St. Mary's. Malamphy held Hofstra All-American Alyssa Parrella to one goal during the first meeting between the teams.
"Liv is a fierce athlete. She only knows one speed," said LaMonica. "She has served us greatly, particularly in face-guard roles as well as wing play on the draws. She has come up big for us in that area, because like Blair, she will not be out-competed."
Chenoweth and Pearre were Preseason All-CAA selections and two of the 66 women's lacrosse players named to the Tewaaraton Watch List during the season.
Towson (9-7) defeated Elon on Wednesday in the first round of the CAA tournament and are set to face top-seeded Drexel in the semifinal Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
