EUGENE, Ore. – Junior
Hayley Horvath and the Towson University track and field team concluded its season at the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Oregon at historic Hayward Field.
Horvath is the first Tiger to compete in the pole vault and the first Tiger to go since Ksenia Safonoa went in 2018 for the hammer throw. In 2008, Kelly Robinson went for the javelin.
"It was a great experience being at Hayward Field surrounded by all the best athletes in the nation", said Horvath. "It didn't go how I hoped it would but I am grateful I qualified and was able to represent Towson on that big of a stage".
"We're extremely proud of Hayley and her performances all year," said head Coach Mike Jackson.
To begin you had to clear the starting mark of 13-3(1/4) to advance to the next mark. Horvath was in the first flight and had three attempts but did not clear the mark.
Lisa Gunnarrson of LSU finished in first place with a mark of 4.40m (14-5(1/4). Lauren Martinez (4.35m, 14-3(1/4) finished in second.
Overall, Horvath had a tremendous season being named the 2021 ECAC and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion.
She qualified for the championships after finishing fourth at the NCAA East Preliminary rounds and was one of four competitors to clear 4.28m (14-00). Her vault tied the personal best and school record which she established at the CAA Championships.
"She preserved and earned her way to the highest level of our sport," said Jackson. "She'll be back and ready to win".
