TOWSON, Md. – Towson University football head coach
Rob Ambrose has announced coaching changes for the team going into the 2021 season.
Almondo Curry has joined the Tigers as the new cornerbacks coach. In addition,
Collin Bauer has moved to defensive line coach and run game coordinator while
Christian Runza has moved up to be the outside linebackers coach.
"We are excited to announce our new staff additions," said Ambrose. "Christian has worked with our defense for the past couple years and has done an exemplary job, his knowledge and passion are contagious. Almondo has transitioned from playing to coaching with ease; with strong roots in Virginia and a wealth of experience; we are excited to have him join the family. Bauer will now transition to the defensive line, while adding the title of run game coordinator, working with the same position group he coached at both Rutgers and Maryland."
Bauer has been with Towson since 2018 and is the team's recruiting coordinator. Previously working with the linebackers, he helped two Tigers, Keon Paye and Diondre Wallace, to earn All-CAA honors plus assisted a defense to be third in the CAA in 2019 with 23.5 points allowed per game. In 2019, Paye was the first Tiger to earn five interceptions in a season since 2004.
"I'm thankful to Coach Ambrose for this new opportunity," said Bauer. "This defensive front seven is a talented, tough and hard-working group. Ready to hit the ground running with the crew."
Curry comes to Towson from Maryville College, where he also worked with the team's secondary. The former defensive standout at Virginia and 2004 Canadian Football League East Defensive Rookie of the Year has been in the collegiate coaching ranks since 2012, including stops at William & Mary, Virginia State and Christopher Newport.
"I'm very excited to be hired by a great university and work with great coaches here at Towson!" said Curry.
Runza moves to outside linebackers coach after being a defensive quality control analyst. Before Towson, the Monmouth graduate, who led the Hawks to the FCS playoffs in 2017, worked as a quarterback and linebackers consultant at Northern Valley High School at Old Tappan.
"I am extremely grateful and excited to work with a great group of players, coaches and staff here at Towson University, let's go Tigers!" said Runza.
Towson will be beginning camp next week in preparation for the 2021 campaign.
