Gymnastics Sweeps Home-Opening Quad Meet

TOWSON, Md. – In front of nearly 1,000 fans, the Towson University women's gymnastics team finished on top of a quad meet, scoring 194.150 points in the Tigers' season-opener at SECU Arena.

Towson (4-0) finished on top with its 194.150 points, followed by No. 30 West Virginia (194.000), West Chester University (192.600) and William & Mary (191.050). Freshman Clara Hong competed all-around on Friday, her first collegiate all-around session. The rookie finished second overall with 38.950 points, trailing only Rachel Hornung of West Virginia's 39.100.

The Tigers continued their choke hold on the bars, sweeping the event. It marks the second time this season Towson recorded at least two of the top three scores in the event.

How it Happened
  • Following an Olympic rotation at home, the Tigers led off on vault. Lauren Bolen and Camille Vitoff tied for third with scores of 9.775. West Virginia's Brooke Alban won the event with a 9.825.
  • Nikki Borkowski landed a 9.700 for the Tigers with freshman Elise Tisler scoring a 9.650 and Jenna Weitz posting a 9.625 to round out the Tigers' scoring.
  • In the second rotation, the Tigers dominated, taking the top three spots on uneven parallel bars. Hong won the event with a 9.825, a career-best, adding two-tenths of a point from her meet last week. Lauren Keener and Grace Vaillancourt tied for second with 9.800s.
  • On the balance beam, Towson clustered its scoring, led by a first-place finish from Cassidy Stuart, who logged a 9.875, nearly equaling a career best. Hong and Emerson Hurst tied for fourth at 9.800 with Weitz tying for sixth at 9.700. Lauren Bolen added a top 10 finish with a 9.700, good enough for ninth place.
  • West Virginia swept the top four spots on the floor, putting pressure back on Towson in the team scoring. Abbie Pierson won the event with a 9.900. Hong and Paige Casper were the Tigers' top scorers with a 9.800 each. Vaillancourt added a 9.750 with Bolen checking in at 9.725.
  • Hong finished second in the all-around competition, posting a 38.950 in her first collegiate all-around effort. She was bookended by Mountaineers Hornung (39.100) and Kendra Combs (38.600). Hong was the only Tiger to compete in all four events.
Behind the Numbers
  • Friday's 194.150 marked the first time since the 2017 season the Tigers out-scored West Virginia.
  • Towson only trailed in the meet after the second rotation, scoring 96.425 behind West Chester's 96.825.
  • In its two meets this season, Towson has landed five of the top six spots on bars, picking up first and third Friday night, coupled with all three top spots at UNH last weekend.
  • This is the second time under head coach Jay Ramirez, now in his third season, the Tigers have opened a season 4-0 in duals. During the 2020 campaign, Towson picked up a win at Penn before sweeping its home opener against William & Mary, West Chester and Cornell.
Up Next for Towson
  • Towson heads out for a two-meet road swing, leading off next weekend at N.C. State.
  • The battle between the top-two EAGL teams in the preseason coaches poll is set for a 4 p.m. start at the Wolfpack's Reynolds Coliseum.
  • The meet will be carried on ACC Network Extra.
