Towson Women’s Basketball Falls to Morgan State

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team fell to Morgan State 76-48 in its return to SECU Arena on Wednesday night.
 
Towson (4-3) used a 7-0 run to tie the game in the second quarter but could not overcome Morgan State (7-2) shooting 55.6% in the second half.
 
Key Stats:
  • As a team, Towson picked up 28 points in the paint.
  • Kylie Kornegay-Lucas led Towson with 14 points, adding a pair of blocks.  Anissa Rivera came near a double-double with seven points and eight rebounds.
  • Morgan State had four double digit scorers, led by Ja'Niah Henson going 10-for-17 from the field with 28 points and four steals.  Charlene Shepherd notched a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds.
How It Happened:
  • Towson hit a layup on its opening possession off a feed from Kylie Kornegay-Lucas to Quinzia Fulmore for the layup.  Morgan State countered by making its first three shot attempts for an early 6-2 lead in the opening minutes.
  • Kornegay-Lucas hit a 10-foot jumper to stop the run, but two more jumpers for the visitors increased the Morgan advantage to seven.  Anissa Rivera hit a tough fadeaway out of a timeout, followed by Kornegay-Lucas drawing contact and hitting a layup.  A Rivera free throw pulled Towson within two at 11-9 Morgan with 2:27 left in the first.
  • Towson kept close with free throws, getting into the paint and drawing contact.  Morgan State stayed ahead with layups and had the lead 16-14 after one.
  • Morgan State rebuilt the lead to seven as coach Laura Harper called timeout.  Towson picked up the pressure in the backcourt, leading to a 7-0 run, capped by a steal, run and score by Patricia Anumgba to tie the game at 22 with under five minutes left in the second.
  • The Lady Bears retook the lead, then Towson tied it back up on an India Johnston corner three.  At 26-26, Morgan State ended the half on a 9-2 run to be up 35-28 at the break.
  • Out of the locker room, the teams went back-and-forth on shots, with Morgan State slowly building the lead.  Alexia Nelson and Skye Williams attacked the paint on driving layups to pull Towson within seven, but Morgan countered with an 8-0 run to go up 51-36 with 2:23 left in the third.
  • Morgan State's hot shooting continued as Towson went into the paint to get points back.  The Tigers trailed 58-44 after three.
  • Towson tried to pick up the tempo in the fourth, but three-straight backets from Shianne Johnson built Morgan State's lead to 18.  Rivera hit a tough jumper, but Towson could not get closer.  The Lady Bears finished on a 12-0 run and won 76-48.
